Typically the site of preshow receptions, the forecourt of the Alex Theatre on Monday was instead a setting for yoga mats and stretching poses.
Every Monday for the next three weeks, the Glendale Arts Pop Up series will host a free hour of yoga at the theater’s entrance — led by local instructors while the sun sets in the west — followed by a chance to rehydrate with complimentary wine or smoothies.
Laura Fremont, longtime owner of Pacific Studio, recently started the Prana Nata Yoga program out of her dance studio and is lending some of her instructors for the free classes.
At the series’ first installment, more than a dozen people came to try out a type of yoga known as Vinyasa.
“This yoga is focused on alignment for the well-being of the body and aligning the body so the muscles are working properly and the bones are stacked properly,” Fremont said.
Despite the classes being held outside of a private studio and within the heart of a bustling downtown, the sound of cars whizzing by doesn’t really get in the way, Fremont said, and her students agree.
Glassell Park resident Barbara Chennault, a yoga practitioner who took the class, said part of the exercise focuses on improving one’s skill at tuning everything out.
“I’ll be able to get something out of it in terms of using yoga to center yourself and block out some of the sounds around us,” she said as she did some warm-up stretches before class.
Nina Crowe, business development and sales manager for Glendale Arts, said the free yoga series could return in the future if it’s popular.
In the meantime, she expects to announce the next Pop Up series, which usually focuses on events such as live music or dance classes, sometime in the next two to three months.
The free yoga series will be held every Monday through Oct. 6 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the forecourt of the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd.
