Iva May Carrico -- 1917 - 2010 -- Obituary/Glendale News Press
Iva May Carrico, a former Glendale resident, a News-Press Woman of Achievement and past president of The Cabrini Literary Guild, died on Nov. 22 in Encinitas. She was 93.
Born in Great Falls, Mont., on Sept. 19, 1917, Carrico and her husband, Champ Lewis, first came to California in the 1940’s and settled in Glendale with their three daughters in 1951. They were members of Glendale’s Incarnation Parish.
She was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by her daughters and two grandsons. Her eldest, Judith, resides with her husband, Joseph Lomax, in Laguna Beach. Linda Carrico, her youngest, and her sons -- Joshua Belle and Adrian Belle -- all live in the Los Angeles area. Iva had been living with her middle daughter, Mara, (AKA Martha Carrico) in the San Diego area at the time of her death.
A life-long artist and poet, Iva Carrico was half Chippewa Cree. She was involved with the Kateri Circle of Los Angeles and the Tekakwitha Conference. For several years, she had been the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) chair and representative for the Ethnic Ministries/Native American community.
Residing in Glendale for nearly sixty years, Iva was committed to numerous Catholic, civic, educational, and philanthropic organizations. She held various offices and positions for all of them. She donated both her artistic talents and time to Catholic Charities, ACT II, Church Women United, and the Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women and Children. For nearly fifty years Iva was a PEO member, a philanthropic educational organization dedicated to women’s erudition. She was active with the Glendale Art Association, Glendale Beautiful, and Civic League.
Iva had received numerous awards during her lifetime for her charity work. Outstanding among them was being one of the Cardinal’s Award Honorees in 2001. Cardinal Roger Mahony has been giving out these awards since 1999 -- “In recognition for extraordinary giving and leadership in improving the quality of life in our community.”
Iva’s spirit will live on through her good works and within the hearts of those who were close to her. She will be missed by many and remembered forever through her art and poetry. May she rest in eternal peace.
