Once dominated by asphalt, a La Crescenta school gets a makeover

St. James-Holy Redeemer School unveiled a new play area on campus Tuesday that was built with help from an anonymous donor and parents, who sought to transform the once asphalt-dominated facility.

Construction began four years ago on the play area located on the school’s upper yard, but when funds ran low, parents of the school’s students rallied together to raise the necessary money to complete the project, which cost about $250,000.

“Thanks to the generous donation from an estate following an individual’s passing, combined with proceeds from annual golf tournaments, the upper yard has been transformed into a beautiful park-like area with fruit trees, grassy hills, amphitheater, sport courts, vegetable garden and play structure,” said the school’s principal, Susan Romero, in a statement.

“The project reinforces part of our mission as a school, to give of yourself and your talents in service to the community and wonderful things can and will happen,” she added.
