Glendale native announces candidacy for Glendale Unified school board

Adams Hill resident Joal Ryan announced Wednesday her intent to run for a seat on the Glendale Unified School Board to represent District D, encompassing the Glenoaks Canyon and Adams Hill neighborhoods.

“I’m running for Glendale school board because I’m a GUSD parent, and I know what’s at stake,” Ryan said. “This is the first time neighborhoods will vote for local representation on the GUSD board. It’s an important moment.”

Ryan was a founding member of the Coalition for a Better Glendale in 2013, which was a grassroots effort to ban the Glendale Gun Show held at the Glendale Civic Auditorium.

The Glendale High graduate is also a mother of a fifth-grader who is enrolled in the Korean dual-langauge immersion program at Mark Keppel Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School, where she has served as president of the school’s foundation.

Ryan is the second Glendale native to announce a bid to represent District D, following Shant Sahakian, who announced his intent to run last month.

Residents will head to the polls to vote for school board candidates in a municipal election on April 4.
