Officials to interview candidates for Glendale Unified’s top post next month

The Glendale Unified School Board will review applications early next month from candidates who are seeking to land the top post in the district, school officials said during a meeting on Tuesday.

Board members also agreed to extend the deadline to apply from Dec. 21 to Jan. 8 to accommodate “a couple other applicants” the search firm hired by the district has found.

“Superintendents that are on break will have a little extra time [to apply],” said Christine Walters, board president.

School officials will review the applications during a closed-session meeting on Jan. 12, and then spend the week of Jan. 19 interviewing the candidates who move further in the hiring process.

Candidates who are applying for the position will likely have some experience working as a superintendent, a key job requirement that the school board agreed upon.

The district of 30 schools and roughly 26,000 students is currently being overseen by two retired co-interim superintendents, Joel Shawn and Marc Winger.

The person selected for the new job will likely assume their new role by July 1.

“We’re in good shape,” school board member Greg Krikorian said.

The district’s former superintendent, Dick Sheehan, unexpectedly left his post in Glendale Unified after Covina-Valley Unified offered him a job to lead that district in May.
