First- and second-grade students serenaded their fellow classmates and parents at John Marshall Elementary School Friday morning with patriotic songs such as “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “This Land is Your Land” during the school’s annual Memorial Day assembly.
“It was a great opportunity for them to perform in front of an audience,” said Principal Carla Walker.
For much of the year, it’s not uncommon for Marshall students to celebrate America with patriotism-themed assemblies, she added.
The students celebrate Christopher Columbus in October, honor veterans in November and pay tribute to U.S. presidents in February.
“It’s been a tradition at this school to have these patriotic assemblies,” she said.
