Volunteers take part in 'Great American Clean-Up'

More than 500 volunteers participated in Glendale’s “Great American Clean-Up” on Saturday.

Volunteers removed graffiti, pulled weeds, picked up trash, painted murals on 26 utility boxes and built a 15-bed garden at Daily High School, a continuation school.

While the Community Development Department and Committee for a Clean & Beautiful Glendale spearheaded the cleanup, several other groups partnered with the leading organizations this year.

The mural program, called “Beyond the Box,” used money the Arts & Culture Commission collected from developer fees to sponsor local artists. The garden at Daily High was built with the help of Glendale students, members of the Glendale Kiwanis Club and graduates of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce’s “Leadership Glendale” program.

Food grown by Daily High students in the new garden is slated to be donated to the school’s culinary arts academy and to local food pantries.
