MONTROSE -- Highlighting this month’s activities for Holy Redeemer

Catholic Church’s upcoming 75th anniversary and refurbishing and building

fund is an elegant and fun evening at the Oakmont Country Club.

Continuing “Preserving The Past . . . Building Our Future” begins

Saturday at 6 p.m. A silent auction precedes dinner, entertainment and a

live auction.

Chairwoman Katie Beckley and her committee have collected a fine

assortment of interesting and valuable items for the auction.

They include vacation weeks in Carlsbad, Mammoth and Sodona, Ariz.,

antiques, television set, and fine art.

“A fun donation was made by Father Jack and Father Gordon, which

includes dinner for eight served by the priests,” said Beckley.

The silent auction begins at 6 p.m. Following dinner at 7:30 will be

entertainment by the Brenda Lynne Orchestra. The live auction follows and

then dancing.

The three-year plan to enhance the beautiful mission-style church

located in the foothills of Montrose began in 1988. At that time the

Rev. John K. Foley announced that the needs of the church had expanded

beyond its current facilities.

“The ‘Preserving The Past . . . Building Our Future’ campaign is our

own opportunity to extend the 75-year legacy of the church by

retrofitting and renovating our beautiful church and by providing needed

renovations to the rectory and school, and creating a permanent Parish

Center in the former convent.”

A goal of $3 million was set for these improvements. To date

parishioners and friends have raised $2 million.

“We hope to start work in the spring,’ said Lynne Raggio,

co-chairwoman of the campaign.

She shares the chairmanship with her husband, Carl Raggio. The first

step will be to enhance Healy Hall as Mass will be held there until all

work is completed.

‘It has been a nice community effort,” she said. “There has been lots

of team effort. We have developed finance, engineering and architectural

committees. I’m very pleased with the progress.”

Raggio said that once serious work begins and people see results the

additional funds will come in. She also said the next fund-raiser will be

a golf tournament planned in the spring.

Holy Redeemer Catholic Church was founded out of a legacy that has

served the spiritual, Eucharistic and educational needs of Catholics

throughout the Crescenta Valley and surrounding communities.

The first Mass was celebrated in 1925 in Fowler Hall with 150 people

present.
