GLENDALE -- The local high school football scene had its good and bad
in 1999. When the All-CIF Southern Section football team was announced,
the good was recognized.
The St. Francis High and Flintridge Prep squads made it to their
respective division semifinals, and those teams got most of the honors,
especially St. Francis (11-2).
Golden Knight offensive lineman Ken Bowman had a great senior year,
and he was the only local to get on the All-CIF Souther Section All
Divisions team.
He was a second-team offensive lineman. Bowman, a 6-foot-2,
226-pounder, was one of the biggest reasons that Matt Milton gained 1,556
yards on the ground.
But Bowman’s highlight might have come in a 41-7 CIF Southern Section
Division III quarterfinal victory over Canyon High, where he scored a
55-yard touchdown on a fumblerooski.
Bowman was also named to the All-CIF Southern Section Division III
offensive team. His teammates John Sciarra and Brett Mitchell also got
the honors.
Sciarra had a breakthrough year in 1999. The junior quarterback threw
for 2,818 yards and 28 touchdowns. His favorite target was the junior
Mitchell, who caught 46 passes for an area-leading 1,024 yards and 10
touchdowns.
Crescenta Valley High’s Scott Vossmeyer and Steve Carballo also made
the Division III offensive team. Vossmeyer, a senior quarterback, threw
for 1,974 yards and 18 touchdowns. The passing yardage was a school
record.
Carballo was an all-purpose player for the Falcons. The senior caught
53 balls, scoring four touchdowns. He also saw time at running back, was
a leader in the secondary and also punted.
The Rebels (5-7) had three players make the All-Division XIII
offensive team. Running back Devin Brown missed the early part of the
year due to an ankle injury, but when he was healthy, he carried Glen
Beattie’s squad deep into the playoffs.
Brown finished the season rushing with 807 yards in just 159 carries
(5.1 yards per carry). He also scored eight rushing touchdowns.
Offensive lineman Armen Toorian also made the team. Toorian was in his
senior year. On the Division XIII defensive team, Rebel lineman Matt
Lauer was honored. The junior was one of the captains on the team,
defensively and offensively as a tight end.
La Canada High (5-6) used a double wing-T offense, and the leader of
the group was senior running back Chet Johnson-Blasucci, who made the
offensive team of Division X.
Johnson-Blasucci gained 1,171 yards in 180 carries (6.5 a carry) and
scored 10 touchdowns.
