On Campus at GCC

Graduation ceremonies for Class III of the Arroyo Seco Fire Academy, a

joint effort of Glendale Community College and the Pasadena Fire

Department, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at The Alex Theatre in

Glendale.

Class III started last July and 29 students are now graduating. They

were enrolled in the weekend academy for eight months (702 hours).

Graduation from the program will give the students a certification of

completion that will allow them to take fire department exams for

full-time employment.

Some of the graduating students were sponsored by local fire

departments and will be returning to those departments to work as

auxiliary or reserve firefighters. To become certified as a Firefighter I

by the California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) a person must receive both

training and experience. The academy program provides the training and it

is CSFM accredited.

After graduation, most cadets become volunteer firefighters for one

year, then they are eligible for Firefighter I certification. Many fire

departments in the state of California require a fire academy certificate

of completion as a minimum for application.

The 702 hours of training cover areas of flammable gases and liquids,

hazardous materials, hoses, ladders and knots, rappelling, wild land fire

control, fire prevention and public education, fire streams, physical

training and live fire training in structures.

The Alex Theater is at 216 N. Brand Blvd. For information, call

240-1000 ext. 5326.
