First president of Glendale National dies

GLENDALE -- Linus E. Southwick II, former chairman of the Board of
Valley National Bank, has died. He was 89.
He died March 6, 2000, at his home in La Canada Flintridge.
Southwick was born in Lincoln, Neb., and grew up in Friend, Neb. He
graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1936 with a degree in
business administration and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi.
In 1957, he was named the first president of the Glendale National
Bank, later known as Valley National Bank, which he started in a room at
the Maryland Hotel. He later became chairman of the Board Emeritus until
the bank was sold to Wells Fargo in 1990.
He served as director of the Los Angeles branch of the Federal Reserve
Bank and president of the Independent Bankers Assn. of Southern
California.
In 1977, he was honored as Glendale’s “Financial Ambassador” and
received the Chamber of Commerce’s Recognition Award for his economic
contributions to the city. He was the director of the California Bankers
Assn. and president of the Glendale Clearing House Assn.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Southwick of La Canada
Flintridge and Janet Southwick Servatius of La Crescenta; son, Linus E.
Southwick III; and grandson, Jason A. Servatius. His wife, Helen Drummond
Southwick, died before him.
Services were held March 10 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Donations
may be made to a charity of choice.
