Nitro golfer injured in automobile accident

GLENDALE -- It was a less-than-favorable day for two local boys’

golf teams for more than one reason.

Competing in the CIF team preliminary rounds, both Glendale and La

Canada highs were unable to advance to Thursday’s finals, thus concluding

their seasons.

For the Nitros, the bigger disappointment came as a result of the loss

of No. 1 player Kyle Marshall, who was injured in a car accident on his

way to meet the team bus in the morning.

Marshall was driving to Glendale High when a dairy truck hit the right

side of his car. Nitro Coach Bob Francis would not comment on the extent

of Marshall’s injuries, but did say that the sophomore went to a hospital

to be checked out for further observation.

The Nitros five remaining players traveled to Soule Park in Ojai to

compete among 19 other teams on the par-72, 6,391-yard course.

Greg Barsom fired a team-low 78, including a pair of birdies, and

David Lee shot 79. Paul Ahn had a 97, and Arby Aiwazian and Alex

Valenzuela both scored 98 for a team-total of 450.

“Kyle is our No. 1 and with him there our score is at least 20 shots

lower,” Francis said. “The next-to-last place team shot a 440 and with

Kyle’s score we would have bested that easily.”

At the L.A. Royal Vista golf course, La Canada placed 15th out of 20

teams, posting a team score of 425.

Sophomore Brandon Shin fired a team-low 81, and freshman Brendan

Shannon and senior Sandy Ryan both fired 83.
