SUNLAND -- More charges may be filed against two men arrested on
suspicion of robbing the La Canada Flintridge Sport Chalet, shooting at a
police officer and committing a home invasion robbery.
Jeffrey Goldstein, 18, and Gary Kanan, 41, have been charged with a
number of crimes including robbery, attempted murder against a peace
officer and theft of property stemming from a crime spree June 28.
“We’re in the midst of trying to connect them to several robberies,”
Det. Rick Jackson said.
Police originally believed the two were connected to a few robberies
that occurred in Los Angeles in the days leading up to the Sport Chalet
heist, Jackson said.
The scope of the police investigation has broadened to include
Northern California and as many as 12 robberies, he said.
The men have not entered pleas to the charges against them. Goldstein
was scheduled to be arraigned July 24 and Kanan on July 10.
Kanan and Goldstein allegedly used a gun to rob the Sport Chalet in La
Canada Flintridge on June 28.
The two fled and were chased by Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s deputies,
who lost the pair in Sunland. There, the men allegedly committed a home
invasion robbery and took the resident’s car, police said.
An LAPD officer spotted the two, who fired at him and fled, police
said.
Kanan was later arrested at Northridge Hospital, where he sought
treatment for a gunshot wound to the groin. Police said he had
accidentally shot himself. Goldstein was arrested near the hospital.
