On Campus at GCC

Both the Science Lecture Series and the Humanities/Social Science

Lecture Series begin this week at Glendale Community College.

“The Best Medicine is Your Own Medicine -- How the Immune System

Defends Your Body’s Frontiers,” part of the Science Lecture Series, will

be presented at noon Tuesday in Chemistry/Math Building Room 225.

The speakers are Mitchell Kronenberg and Hilde Cheroutre (husband and

wife) of the Division of Developmental Immunology at the La Jolla

Institute of Allergy and Immunology.

Kronenberg received his doctorate at Cal Tech and was a full professor

at UCLA. Cheroutre earned her doctorate at the State University of Ghent,

Belgium. Both have been widely published and are greatly respected in

their field.

Upcoming lectures in the series are “Telescopes and Microscopes” on

Sept. 26, “Everything You Wanted to Know About Fish But Were Afraid to

Ask” on Oct. 24, and “Fibonacci Numbers” on Nov. 28.

“Mono Lake: Leading Edge on the Cadillac Desert,” part of the

Humanities/Social Science Lecture Series, will be presented at noon

Thursday in Kreider Hall. Herley Jim Bowling of the Mono Lake Committee

is the guest speaker.

The committee is a nonprofit, citizens group dedicated to protecting

and restoring the Mono basin ecosystem and educating the public about

Mono Lake. Bowling is the coordinator of the organization’s Southern

California education programs.

He will show slides and discuss the natural history and recent human

history of Mono Lake and its connections to the city of Los Angeles.

Other scheduled topics are “Los Angeles River: A Recreational Resource

Once More?” on Sept. 28, “Election 2000 Panel” on Oct. 26, and “Election

2000: the On-Screen Campaign” on Nov. 16.

There is no charge for the lectures, which are open to the public. For

THEATRE SEASON BEGINS IN OCTOBER

The first production of the GCC theatre season begins Oct. 5 with the

eerie psychological drama “Night Must Fall” by Emlyn Williams. The play

runs for three weeks with performances held Thursday through Sunday in

the Auditorium Mainstage Theatre.

Also on the schedule is the original play “Backswing” by Samuel Dyches

performed in the Studio Theatre set to open Nov. 2. Spring productions

are Aug. Strindberg’s “Miss Julie” opening March 1; The musical “Kiss Me

Kate,” with music and lyrics by Cole Porter and book by Bella and Samuel

Spewack, in the Mainstage Theatre for six shows starting April 20; and

“Life in Ten Minutes,” 10-minute plays directed by students, opening May

10 in the Studio Theatre.

ANIMATION, ART AND MUSIC DEPARTMENTS SHOW THEIR BEST Guest

lecturers from the animation industry come to GCC and speak to students,

colleagues and the public for the Animation Lecture Series.

The series opens with Robin Allan, respected authority on Walt Disney,

at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in the auditorium.

GCC’s Art Gallery will have it’s first exhibition of the year Oct. 2

to 27. “Material Matters” displays the works of six L.A. artists who deal

in a variety of unlikely materials. The opening reception will be Oct. 5

from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the

The fall line-up of music performances will begin with a College

Community Orchestra concert on Nov. 5 in the Auditorium. The Jazz Band

will perform on Nov. 19, the Concert Singers have a show scheduled for

Dec. 3 at San Marino Community Church, students in the Applied Music

Program will give a music recital on Dec. 8, and the annual Holiday

Choral Concert will be held Dec. 10.
