LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- “West Side Story Live!” is the program for The

Pasadena Pops Orchestra when it performs tonight at Descanso Gardens in

La Canada Flintridge.

The pops, under the baton of Maestra Rachael Worby, will present

Leonard Bernstein’s classic musical retelling of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and

Juliet.” Soloists are Joanna Mongiardo and Shaun Butler.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for picnickers. The concert begins at 7:30.

Children’s book illustrator

gives reading in Montrose

Marla Frazee, children’s book illustrator, will give a reading of her

new book “Harriet, You’ll Drive Me Wild,” by Mem Fox, beginning at 4 p.m.

today at Once Upon a Time, 2284 Honolulu Ave., Montrose.

She will also be available to sign books. A Pasadena resident, Frazee

has illustrated other children’s books such as “The Seven Silly Eaters,”

by Mary Ann Hoberman.

Descanso hosting

new art exhibit

Watercolors, oil and stoneware will combine in an art exhibit at the

Boddy House Gallery at Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge

continuing through Sept. 21.

Laurie Henricks displays her impressionist-style watercolors featuring

bright florals, still-lifes and plein art landscapes. Trish Kertes offers

impressionistic oil landscapes in this display. She is a member of the

Verdugo Hills Art Assn., which selected her Artist of the Year in 1998.

Daniel and Marcelle Tolkoff will be showing their colorful high fire

stoneware, including vases, dinnerware, patio pots and collector pieces.

The exhibit is free with admission, which costs $5 for adults, $3 for

seniors, $1 for children 5 to 12; and under 5 free. Tram tours are $2,

and parking is free. Descanso is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. It

MUSEUMS

Bolton Hall features

early Sunland, Tujunga

Bolton Hall Museum in Tujunga, run by the Little Landers Historical

Society, features historical displays relating to the Sunland and Tujunga

areas. It is open to the public at 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Sundays. Admission

The Doctors’ House

features Glendale history

The Doctors’ House, tucked inside Brand Park in Glendale, is a

Victorian home in Queen Anne Eastlake-style open to the public from 2 to

4 p.m. on Sundays. Built in the 1880s by real estate entrepreneur E.T.

Byram, the house has been restored. Brand Park is at 1601 W. Mountain St., Glendale.

Looking back at the foothills

from the Lanterman House

The Lanterman House, owned by the city of La Canada Flintridge, is

operated by the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation and is open to the

public from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and the first and third

Sundays of the month. It will be closed through August and will reopen

Sept. 5.

The house was built in 1914 by the founding family of La Canada

Flintridge. The city took ownership in 1987 and public tours have been

offered since 1995.

Gordon R. Howard Museum showing

San Fernando Valley exhibit

A special exhibit of photos and artifacts depicting early life in the

San Fernando Valley can be viewed along with the regular exhibits of

early Burbank at the Gordon R. Howard Museum. “A Patchwork History of the

San Fernando Valley” was curated by Robert Marshall, head archivist at

Cal State Northridge and Lara Bickell, doctoral student in American

history of Claremont Graduate University.

Hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, but donations are

accepted. The Gordon R. Howard Museum is at 1015 W. Olive Ave., Burbank.

Go to Giggles for salsa, merengue

Giggles night club, 215 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale, is offering a

mixture of dancing and salsa lessons. On Fridays and Saturdays, dance to

house, disco and Spanish rock with no cover charge before 9 p.m., $10

after 9 p.m. on Fridays and $12 after 9 p.m. on Saturdays. There is a

strict dress code.

Salsa and merengue dancing is offered on Saturdays with lessons for

Crazy Jack’s, 4311 W. Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank, offers live country

more. Five nights a week, a DJ spins some tunes for the dance floor.

Every Wednesday there’s swing dancing at 9 p.m., with an hourlong lesson

before that, all for $5. Tuesday is Dollar Drink night, for $2 cover.

Karaoke happens every Thursday starting at 9:30 p.m. There are also 12

pool tables and a pool league, dart boards and a darts league, and the

Vegas lounge-style. The club presents its Singers Showcase every night

from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. for those willing to croon for a crowd. Choose from

more than 10,000 songs and get a free cassette recording of your

performance.

The club opens its bar at 5 p.m. and starts serving dinner at 6:30

p.m. During show breaks, hit one of two dance floors playing disco, salsa

JAZZ

Jax Bar and Grill in Glendale offers live entertainment every night of

the week. Show times are 9 p.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 p.m.

to 1:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday; and 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Sunday. Happy

Hour Jazz is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. There is

no cover and no minimum.

Skating is cool fun

at Pickwick arena

Pickwick Ice Skating Arena, 1001 Riverside Drive in Burbank, has

public skating, figure and ice hockey lessons. It is also available for

private parties.

Public session hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

and Saturdays from 8 to 10 p.m. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the

hours are from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., and Wednesdays from 8:15 to 9:45 p.m.

Admission is $6 adults, $5 for kids 17 and under, and $3 extra for skate

Equestrian center great

for horsing around

The Los Angeles Equestrian Center, 480 Riverside Drive in Burbank,

holds horse events throughout the year but also rents out the animals

seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Horse rentals are $15 for one

hour, $24 for 1 1/2 hours and $28 for two hours, all with a $15 deposit,

cash only. Private hourlong lessons are $35.

Private parties can take night rides or, for the summer only, sunset

barbecue rides. The sunset rides are also open to the public. Call

Talk to the animals

at the Los Angeles Zoo

The L.A. Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8.25

for adults, $5.25 for seniors 65 and older, $3.25 for kids 2-12 and free

for kids under 2. Parking is free and strollers and wheelchairs are

Moonlight -- a good skate

for generations

Moonlight Roller Rink, 5110 San Fernando Road in Glendale, offers a

variety of activities for tiny tots to adults from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Saturdays and Sundays. Sorry kids -- adults only from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30

p.m. every Monday. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays skate to live organ music

from 8 to 10:30 p.m.

Children 12 and under skate 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and can bring

the parents along. Kids’ roller skating classes are from noon to 12:45

p.m. and the intermediate classes are from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. on

Saturdays. The adult classes are from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays.

All classes are $5 each, which include the skate rental if needed.

Brand Library offers

Brand Library has a large collection of music and art books, records

and periodicals and an art gallery. It is open from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday

Family entertainment at Chuck E. Cheese

Chuck E. Cheese offers family entertainment and special packages for

children’s birthday parties.

The restaurant’s specialty is homemade pizza and prices range from

under $5 for an individual pie a mom and child can split a $19 supreme

with 12 slices. It also has a salad bar featuring fresh veggie toppings,

sandwiches and bread sticks.

ART EXHIBITS

“Four Women/Four Perspectives” continues at Brand Library Art

Galleries, 1601 W. Mountain St., Glendale.

The exhibit, continuing through Sept. 9, showcases a combination of

artists who have gained recognition in the Southern California art scene

through their years of service in teaching, serving as jurors and

participating in exhibits.

Glendale resident Jane Friend organized the show. Along with her works

are those of Betty McDonald of La Canada Flintridge, Bonese Collins

Turner and Virginia Jackman.

The galleries are open from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 1 to 6

THEATER ARTS

Charles Nelson Reilly

show ends this weekend

Charles Nelson, the master of the one-man show, presents “Save It for

the Stage: The Life of Reilly.” through Sunday at the Falcon Theater,

4252 Riverside Drive, Burbank.

The show is a look back at comedian Reilly’s colorful half-century of

life on stage and off. His theater life began in the fourth grade, when

his teacher cast him as Columbus in the school play. He is also a theater

director and a director of opera.

Shows are at 8 tonight and 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The Falcon is at 4252

Riverside Drive. Parking is free. Tickets are $30 and $15 for students.

‘Funny Bones’ fun festival

for children at the Falcon

“Funny Bones,” a family festival of fun, finishes its run this weekend

performed by mime artists Keith Berger and Sharon Diskin.
