First Baptist changing with the times

GLENDALE -- The First Baptist Church at La Crescenta is going modern

while staying old-fashioned.

The congregation has a choice of an 8:30 a.m. traditional service and

an 11 a.m. contemporary service. The former will utilize a choir, hymns

and familiar choruses. The latter features songs, drama and a praise

band, made up of drums, an electric bass, guitars and keyboards.

“I think it’s an exciting approach to worship,” said Associate Pastor

Dennis Mattson about the newer, contemporary style of worship. “It has a

lot of energy and is uplifting.”

Both services this Sunday will offer Communion, both will include

readings from scripture and have a message. This week’s message will be

on the 10 Commandments, and will include drama and a short video

presentation during the 11 a.m. service.

In responding to the needs of its congregation, the church is flexible

to change, Mattson said.

“We believe this is something that will help everybody to worship in a

way they are comfortable,” Mattson said.
