DESCANSO GARDENS
Volunteer opportunities include hands-on gardening, working in the tea
house, assisting as a wedding host on the weekends, working in the gift
shop, special events, lectures and in the Special Education Garden. Train
conductors and ticket takers are also needed. Training is required for
docents and speakers bureau personnel. A docent training program will
begin Sept. 11 and continue for 10 weeks.

THE ALEX THEATRE
People with an interest in the performing arts and who enjoy working
with the public are sought to work as volunteer ushers in Glendale’s
historic theatre.

AMERICAN RED CROSS GLENDALE-CRESCENTA VALLEY CHAPTER
Volunteers needed for blood drives; afternoons, evenings and weekends.
Volunteers also needed to learn how to be a puppeteer for Headstarts,
children in grades K-3, and helping educate children in earthquake
preparedness. Health, safety and disaster workers are also needed.

AMERICAN SOUTHWESTERN RAILWAY AT TRAVEL TOWN MUSEUM
Docents and restoration staff are needed to work on historic passenger
cars at the Travel Town Museum in Griffith Park. Crews work on weekends
and lunch is provided. Experience is not necessary; the association will
train. Enthusiastic speakers to lead tours and caboose attendants are

AUTRY MUSEUM OF WESTERN HERITAGE
Men and women interested in history are needed to join the museum’s
dedicated tour guides who give tours for school groups. A nine-month
training class beginning Oct. 13 includes a comprehensive Western history
course, lectures by guest scholars and museum staff, as well as a meeting
with curators to learn about the museum’s artifacts. There is no fee for
the class, and applications are available by mail. Volunteers are also
needed in the museum store and collections.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA VERDUGO HILLS COUNCIL
Office volunteers are needed to assist with administrative duties such
as preparing The Echo newsletter for mailing.

CAREXCHANGE
Volunteers to help seniors with some of the chores of daily living are
needed. Services include meal preparation, light housekeeping, minor home
repairs, yard work, errands, shopping, transportation to medical
appointments or just making a friendly visit or phone call. Volunteers
earn one hour of credit for every hour of time they lend. CareAmerica 65
Plus members can exchange hours earned for similar services when
assistance is needed. Nonmembers can donate credit hours to a CareAmerica
65 Plus friend or relative in need. In this area, the program serves
people in Glendale, La Canada Flintridge, Montrose, Tujunga and Verdugo
City. Orientations are held on and individual basis.

CLUB MAPLE
Club Maple, a weekly program for physically and mentally challenged
individuals, needs volunteers to assist with arts and crafts activities,
field trips and evening meeting programs. Special event volunteers are
needed to assist with upcoming programs. Volunteers with a green thumb
are needed for park beautification projects such as flower and tree
planting, maintenance and trash pickup.

CRESCENTA-CANADA FAMILY YMCA
Anyone with an interest in health and fitness and a desire to work
with a variety of people is invited to become a volunteer fitness
trainer. Opportunities for one-on-one personal training and class
instruction are available. The YMCA will provide training and
certification. Current CPR and first-aid certifications are required.
There are also openings for volunteers in aquatics and gymnastics.

GIRL SCOUTS MOUNT WILSON VISTA COUNCIL
Needed are troop leaders, assistant troop leaders and people to
organize and coordinate resources for the troops in their area.
Volunteers are also needed for a variety of administrative duties, to
serve as foreign language translators, to train volunteers and serve on
committees to organize and plan councilwide events. The Mount Wilson
Vista Council includes Glendale, La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta,
Montrose and Verdugo City.

GLENDALE ADVENTIST MEDICAL CENTER
Volunteers may help in either the clinical or nonclinical setting.
Clinical opportunities include patient rounds, patient transport and
assisting nurses. Nonclinical opportunities include administrative
duties.

Also needed are community outreach assistants, office assistants with
data entry skills, computer training and other skills to fill openings in
the Adventist Health Advantage Older Adult Club. Volunteers 55 and older
are also needed to help at the hospital gift shop evenings from 5 to 8
p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. The shop is closed Saturdays.

GLENDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
People are needed to help with a variety of special events and
administrative duties. Those who have expertise in sales and customer
service are also needed to help with membership drives and member service
projects.

GLENDALE CRIME STOPPERS
Glendale Crime Stoppers is a community organization assisting the
Glendale Police Department in solving local crime. Volunteers are needed
to serve on various committees and to make contact with Glendale business
leaders and residents.

GLENDALE HEALTHY KIDS
Volunteers are needed to teach from a prepared curriculum in the
Glendale Unified School Districts comprehensive dental education program
for all first-grade children. Training and teaching materials will be
provided.

GLENDALE HUMANE SOCIETY
Opportunities to walk dogs and socialize cats are available for those
who would like to work directly with animals. Volunteers must be 16 or
older. There is a training session at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19.

GLENDALE LEADERS FOR AIDS AWARENESS
Volunteers of all ages who have secretarial skills, teaching ability
and a passion for educating the community about HIV/AIDS are welcome to
get involved and become more informed on the subject. Although the group
is not active at present, its founders still maintain and pursue its
original goals in various ways.
“We started an AIDS book collection at the Glendale Public Library, “
said spokesperson Marilyn Gunnell, who has maintained the notion of the
organization despite lack of support from some members of the community.
“We got the Glendale AIDS quilt hung at city hall, and we still give
programs such as AIDS:101 periodically.”

GLENDALE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AND HEALTH CENTER
The hospital is seeking volunteers who are at least 18. No experience
is required, but applicants must be courteous, dependable and have good
communication skills. A minimum commitment of four hours a week for six
months is required.

GLENDALE PARKS, RECREATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICES
Individual and group volunteers are needed to become part of TEAM
(Together Everyone Accomplishes More). Volunteers may choose from
interesting and rewarding assignments and work a flexible schedule. A

GLENDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT COPPS PROGRAM
Interested men and women are needed to volunteer a few hours a week in
the Community Police Partnership (COPPS) program. The program hopes to
encourage Glendale residents to become more familiar with its police
force and learn more about how we can maintain a safer city.
“We hope to get the community involved in what we do,” says COPPS
Coordinator Martin Lillibridge. “This program is designed to establish a
rapport between us and the community.”
Police Department substations at Glendale Adventist Hospital and in
Montrose need friendly, outgoing people to answer phones, conduct general
office business and answer police-related questions. No experience is
necessary. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age. Retirees are welcome.

GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Adult Reading Program is looking for volunteers to assist in its
literacy program for English-speaking adults, as well as reading and
writing. Volunteers will undergo a training program, prior to their first
teaching experience. Volunteers will assist learners with reading and
writing and with conversation skills. There is a training session for
anyone interested from 6 to 9 p.m., Sept. 25 and 27 in the auditorium of
Glendale Public Library. Those interested should call ahead at 548-6450.
Friends of the Glendale Public Library need assistance with
fund-raising activities including the book sale and a direct mail
campaign. Proceeds are used to purchase books and materials, and to help
sponsor children’s programming.

Grandparents & Books is looking for adults who like to read to younger
children, either after school or during the school day. Training and
support are provided for volunteers. A minimum six-month commitment is
required.

A docent’s group provides tours to the public. Docent training is offered
to individuals who would like to inform the public about services at the

GLENDALE PROJECT ACHIEVE FOR THE HOMELESSVolunteers are needed to help
with meal services at a 40-bed shelter that provides job development and
life-skills counseling. People participating in the Guest Chef program
allow case managers to spend more time with clients.

GLENDALE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ASSN.
The current renewal program of the Glendale Symphony Orchestra
Association creates unique opportunities for meaningful volunteer
involvement. The prerequisites are a love of music, people and community.
The organization is actively involved in a number of projects, including
general office management, fund-raising, concert and event production,
public relations and concert promotions.

GLENDALE YOUTH COALITION PROJECT Y.E.S.
The school district is looking for volunteers who want to share their
special talents and skills with children at Marshall and Edison
elementary schools as part of a free after-school child care program. The
project is a collaborative effort of service organizations that includes:
American Red Cross, YMCA and YWCA, Catholic Charities, Glen Roberts Child
Study Center, Glendale Homeless Coalition (Project Achieve), Glendale
Adventist Medical Center, Glendale Unified School District, Glendale
Memorial Hospital, and Glendale Police Department.
Edison and Marshall Elementary School sites are open from 2:30 to 5:30
p.m. Monday through Friday. Other sites’ hours vary. Potential volunteers
must complete several processes, including TB testing,finger printing and
orientation classes, before being placed at a school site, all paid for
by Project Y.E.S.

Volunteers are needed to teach English as a second language. The
crisis hot line has openings for those willing to answer phones, once

GLENDALE YWCA DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROJECT
The YWCA is seeking volunteers to work with battered women and their
children.

JEWISH BIG BROTHERS
Adult volunteers are needed to serve as mentors to children from
single-parent families in the Jewish Big Brothers/Camp Max Straus Sports
Buddies program. Operated at the Camp Max Straus site in Glendale as a
part of Recreation Athletics Development, the free mentoring program for
elementary school-aged children of all ethnic and religious backgrounds
matches volunteers to small groups of children for a wide variety of
noncompetitive sports games and activities during a series of supervised
Sunday programs.

RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
Volunteers ages 55 and older are needed to help in the hospital’s

SALVATION ARMY
Drivers are needed for the Meals on Wheels program. Volunteers use
their own vehicles to deliver meals to home-bound individuals in the
Glendale area from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Volunteers can help once a week or as little as once a month.

SAFEPLACE is a program that assists with homeless, runaway, pregnant
teens and other youths at risk. The program hopes to bring together the
business community and the school district to make the lives of Glendale
children better.
“People don’t want to acknowledge these problems, but some of us want
to do something about it,” Program leader Marilyn Gunnell says of
SAFEPLACE. “Glendale Unified is very supportive. And having the school
district’s support is essential.”
Volunteers are needed to assist in fund-raising and to begin early
stages of program development. The program will be housed at the Glendale
YMCA, and have sites at firehouses, where trained counselors will be
available to assist Glendale children with problems.

VOLUNTEERS FOR YOUTH GLENDALE YOUTH COALITION
A collaborative of 30 local private and public organizations and
agencies including the city of Glendale, the Glendale Unified School
District and many other partners. The coalition’s immediate goal is to
provide training and TB testing free of charge to anyone who is presently
volunteering or plans to volunteer in any program that serves Glendale
youth. The long-range plan is to provide youth with creative and
challenging outlets and to provide them with opportunities to participate
in supervised activities outside of school.

VOLUNTEER TAX ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The American Assn. of Retired Persons Tax-Aide program seeks
volunteers trained in co-operating with the Internal Revenue Service to

VNACARE: HOSPICE IN THE HOME
VNACare, formerly Verdugo Hills Visiting Nurse Assn., needs volunteers
for clerical and fund-raising projects, patient and bereavement support
to hospice families and helping with community flu clinics during the
