On Campus at GCC

“Election 2000: The On-Screen Campaign,” will be presented on Thursday

at Glendale Community College as part of the Humanities/Social Science

Lecture Series.

The speakers are Amy Garawitz of the Museum of TV and Radio and speech

instructor Nathaniel Brown, whose doctoral dissertation addresses

campaigning on the Internet.

The event will be held at noon in Kreider Hall. Admission is free and

ART EXHIBITION OPENS

An exhibition titled “4 Corners & a Wall,” featuring the installations

of five artists, opens today in the GCC Art Gallery and continues through

Dec. 8.

A reception for the artists is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the

gallery. Artists are Karen Bonfigli, Andreas Hessing, Alex Kritselis,

Jessica Newman-Skrentny and Mercedes Teixido.

Admission is free and open to the public. The gallery is in the

Library building. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday

COLLEGE REPS AT EVENING FAIR Representatives from 35 colleges and

universities, both public and private, will be on the San Gabriel Plaza

at GCC on Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Evening Transfer Fair

is sponsored by the Transfer Center and will include reps from the CSU

and UC systems and several private institutions. For information call

JAZZ BAND GIVES CONCERT

The GCC Jazz Band will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in the

auditorium. Raymond Burkhart is director of the band. The program

includes big band tunes and jazz standards.

Tickets are $5 general admission and $3 for students and seniors. For

Burkhart teaches several classes at GCC and is a trumpeter, conductor

and composer.

‘BACKSWING’ FEATURES LOCAL TALENT

There are only four more performances of Samuel Dyches’ “Backswing,”

presented by the GCC Theatre Arts Department in the Auditorium Studio

Theatre.

Set in modern-day New York, “Backswing” tells the story of a young man

trying to become the next handball champion at a New York City park. His

life is complicated by his brother’s return home from prison. Contains

adult language and subject matter.

Final performances are at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and

at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The lead character Rookie is played by St. Francis High grad Scott

Hounsell in his GCC debut. P.J. Kilanski, an on-air personality at radio

station 100.3 “The Beat,” plays the brother, Brian.

Betty Ann Ortega of Tujunga plays their mother Rose. Also in the cast

are Glendale resident R.B. Dilanchian as Angel, St. Francis High grad

Benjamin Magallanes Jr. as Fireman and Glendale High grad Aaron Moe as

Wallman.

Catherwood and Ortega have both eared American College Theatre

Festival Irene Ryan Acting nominations for previous performances at GCC.

Crescenta Valley High grad Dominika Ossowska is assistant director.

Christopher Krambo of La Canada Flintridge is the set designer. Jamie

Lynn Sloniker, who attended Burroughs High, is stage manager. Coree

McCartie of Glendale is assistant stage manager/light board operator.

Nathan Milisavljevich is sound designer and Mary Sullivan is lighting

designer. Krambo, McCartie, Milisavljevich, Sloniker and Sullivan have

all received honors from the American College Theatre Festival their

technical work.

General admission is $7 and $5 for students and seniors. Reserve

reservations are strongly recommended. There is no late seating for this

production.
