UNIVERSAL CITY -- A Glendale Spanish-language television station
captured six trophies at this weekend’s Golden Mike Awards, including
best half-hour newscast.
Telemundo 52, a television station that serves the greater Los Angeles
area, carried the best newscast award with its “Noticiero TELEMUNDO 52”
program. It also won awards for its news writing, reporting and editing.
Carolyn Fox, executive director of the Radio and Television News Assn.
of Southern California, which gives out the awards, said the
association’s judges were impressed with Telemundo 52’s programming.
“It’s more difficult for them, because they have to give an English
translation for the judges to do the judging,” Fox said.
But it’s common for non-English stations to compete for the awards,
she said.
“It’s been like that for many years,” she said. “As long as I can
remember.”
Telemundo 52 Vice President and General Manager Fernando Lopez said
the station has been improving its morning, evening and weekend
programming and hiring new personnel in recent months. The goal, he said,
is to lay the foundation for a channel that will compete with all news
programs -- no matter what language they’re in.
“We want to be not only become the best Spanish newscast in the city
but the best newscast period,” he said.
