LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- When Edward Lee ofthe La Canada High boys’

tennis team stared at the scoreboard and said he had never seen so many

zeros before, referring to his teams’ performance against Arcadia at the

La Canada Flintridge Country Club on Monday, it pretty much summed up the

match.

The Spartans were defeated by the Apaches 14-4 -- who are ranked No. 5

in the CIF Southern Section Division I -- as La Canada’s singles players

were outscored, 56-1, in games.

“We don’t have anybody who can be really solid for us in singles,”

Spartan Coach Will Moravec said. “Any given day, any of the guys could

play well, but I just hope one of those days will be soon.”

The Spartans (5-10) won four doubles sets, led by the No. 1 doubles

team of Lee and Phillip Kenney, who swept their sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1.

“We both are having a great season and it cancels out our teams’ poor

play, but they hang in there most of the time,” said Kenney, who along

with Lee will be playing in the OJAI Easter Classic tournament next week

against top United States Tennis Assn. competition.

La Canada’s No. 2 doubles team of Eric Yoo and Robin Kim won one of

their three sets, 0-6, 2-6, 6-3.

“Our attitude and spirit is there, but we’re kind of weak right now

where we’re rebuilding, but next season we’ll be a deeper team,” Lee

said.

No. 1 singles player Gordon Hong and No. 3 singles player Warren Li of

Arcadia (13-0) did not give up a game against their opponents.

“I knew Arcadia was really good this year and it kind of went the way

I predicted it,” Moravec said. “I was really happy with Phillip and Ed,

because I thought this was going to give them a test and they passed the

test.”
