Jose Mercade is the recipient of the ninth annual William L. Parker
Exceptional Service Award at Glendale Community College.
Mercade is a professor, counselor, division chairman of college
services and coordinator of the Baja California Field Studies Program, in
its 28th year.
Classes in marine biology, natural history, geography and Spanish are
among those offered each summer through the popular program. Students
stay close to the ocean at the college’s field station, Estacion del Mar
Cortes, in the town of Bahia de los Angeles on the Baja peninsula of
Mexico.
Mercade, a resident of Pasadena, attended Pasadena City College and
Cal State L.A. He received his educational doctorate from Nova
Southeastern University in Florida.
The service award was given for the first time in 1993 to Parker, a
philosophy professor, upon his retirement after 32 years at GCC.
Recipients of the award are chosen by the college Academic Senate
based on long term service to GCC. Criteria include multiple service
areas such as academic, professional and community; recognition by
faculty, staff, students and administration; and that the recipient’s
contributions will have a lasting impact on the institution.
The winner is announced at the commencement ceremony each spring.
DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCED
Economic professor Mark Maier is the recipient of the 15th annual
Distinguished Faculty Award at GCC.
Earlier this year, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of
Teaching named Maier as a Carnegie Scholar.
Only 30 faculty from higher education are chosen from around the
country each year. Carnegie Scholars serve a one-year term during which
they investigate and document work on issues in teaching and learning
related to their field. They also spend two 10-day summer sessions
together at the foundation.
In addition, Maier recently received a $50,000 National Science
Foundation grant for his Just-in-Time Teaching project.
Last year, the California Federation of Teachers gave Maier a
first-place award for Best Feature for his article in GCC’s faculty/staff
newsletter Chaparral titled Glendale’s Growing Guy Gap.
He has had numerous articles published as well as the books “The Date
Game: Controversies in Social Science Statistics” (M.E. Sharp Third
Edition, 1999) and “City Unions: Managing Discontent in New York City”
(Rutgers University Press, 1987).
He has been a member of the GCC faculty since 1988 and is a resident
of Pasadena. Maier attended Oberlin College in Ohio, receiving honors in
economics, and earned his doctorate degree at the New School for Social
Research in New York.
The Distinguished Faculty Award is also sponsored by the Academic
Senate. The recipient is chosen following months of nominations by
faculty, staff and students and a committee selection process. The winner
is announced each year during commencement ceremonies and is asked to
give a lecture or presentation during the fall semester.
