Congratulations

Flintridge Preparatory School graduate Steven John Pearson, the son of

Don and Ann Pearson, has received the Gordon B. Hinckley Scholarship from

Brigham Young University.

While in high school, Steven was a member of the state championship

cross-country team, as well as the track team, student senate and chess

club. He plans to major in economics at Brigham Young.

David Vincent Moore, the son of Steve and Jan Moore of Glendale,

graduated from USC with a degree from the Annenberg School of

Communication, with a minor in construction planning and management.

He was named to the dean’s list and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha

fraternity, where he served on the executive board. He is a graduate of

St. Francis High School, where he served as a graduate rector for the

Kairos Retreat program for the past four years.

He is attending the University of Oregon Law School.

Laura Catherine O’Connor of Glendale was initiated into the University

of Illinois chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, a national scholastic honorary

society.

Elinor Lee of La Crescenta has received a $1,000 college scholarship

award from the Asian Pacific Youth Leadership program.

Additionally, Lee designated the Korean School Assn. of America to

receive a $500 honorarium offered by the program.

Taron Untiedt of La Canada Flintridge Troop 555 earned the rank of

Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting.

His Eagle Rock project was to build a 16-foot-by-4-foot stage for the

Wildlife Waystation. With help from fellow Scouts and support of the

Wildlife volunteers, he was able to complete this project.

Over the 10 years he has been involved in Scouting, he has received

merit badges in more than 31 categories including journalism, camping,

rock climbing and more. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow and

Venture Scouts.

Eriko Iwata formerly of Glendale received a bachelor’s degree in

nursing from Cal State Northridge.

She came to the United States from Japan six years ago with her son

while her husband remained in Tokyo and enrolled in Glendale Community

College. After transferring to CSUN in 1997, she embarked on a

full-course load, juggling child care, classes and later a job as an

intensive care nurse at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

She maintains a Web site for Japanese nurses on American nursing

practices, as well as how to apply to an American university to study

nursing. She has also written articles for a Japanese nursing magazine

about her experiences in the United States.

Iwata is now attending the University of San Francisco’s Medical

School on a full scholarship. She plans to return to Japan to share her

knowledge with her homeland.

Karen Llewellyn is the 2001 recipient of the Homemaker Academic

Scholarship sponsored by the Glendale Community College Academic Senate.

The mother of 8-year-old twins had a 4.0 grade-point average at GCC

before transferring to Occidental College. Llewellyn, a history major,

came to the United States from England in 1989 and is a Glendale

resident.

The criteria for the $1,000 scholarship include completion of more

than 50 units, transferring to a four-year program, a GPA higher than 3.5

and continuing responsibility of homemaking and caring for one or more

minor children.

Alen Andriassian has joined the GCC staff as the student activities

coordinator in the Office of Student Affairs.

Andriassian is a former GCC student who served as president of the

Associated Students and as the student trustee in 1998-1999. He then

transferred to Loyola Marymount University where he earned his bachelor’s

degree in business administration.

As student activities coordinator, Andriassian is the staff advisor to

the student legislature, oversees student organizations, and coordinates

campus activities and student-leadership programs. Activities being

planned include Mexican Independence Day and Armenian Independence Day

celebrations.

Two Glendale residents have received degrees from Oregon State

University.

Bryan Daniel Riffel received a bachelor’s degree cum laude in

mechanical engineering. Steve Michael Yaeger received a bachelor’s degree

in civic engineering.

Vahe Sardaryanst has graduated with a master’s of public health degree

from the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth.

Holly Olivia Wilson of Glendale was placed on the University of

Oklahoma Norman campus honor roll for the spring semester.

Three Glendale students have graduated from Boston College. Melanie C.

Sapiandante has graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from its

College of Arts and Sciences.

Brandon M. Gantus has graduated with a bachelor’s degree from its

College of Arts and Sciences.

Mark J. Lim has graduated with a bachelor’s degree from its Wallace E.

Carroll School of Management.
