GLENDALE -- A mini concert by the national award-winning Hoover High
Jazz Ensemble will be part of the opening reception festivities for the
new art show from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Brand Galleries in Brand Park.
The works on display will be Nobuyo Okuda’s “Streams,” a site-specific
exhibit, including molded, hanging and woven metals and water. Visitors
will be encouraged to walk through the exhibit using themselves to form
the stream. Okuda has shown work twice at Brand Galleries, each time
transforming the inner space into a work of art as well as using the wall
space.
David Doherty, also a returning artist to the Brand Galleries, uses
vividly colored paints and pastels in creating imaginary vistas and
urbanscapes, as well as portraits of the people and pets realistically
surrounding him.
Both artists will be in the gallery for a talk at 4 p.m. The Hoover
High Jazz Ensemble will perform at 6 p.m. All events are free.
Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday
and Thursday and 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. The exhibit continues through

Previews begin for Moliere’s ‘The Imaginary Invalid’
Previews have started for Moliere’s ‘The Imaginary Invalid’ produced
by A Noise Within.
The play stars Apollo Dukakis as Argan, the imaginary invalid. Also
starring are Ann Marie Lee, Mary Dolson and William Dennis Hunt.
Argan, a hypochondriac, is surrounded by a household besieged by young
lovers, a cheating wife, an irrepressible servant, an unscrupulous lawyer
and doctors, doctors, doctors. Moliere, a satirist and irreverent spirit,
prescribes large doses of laughter as an antidote to the “invalid’s”
misfortunes as he learns about how to negotiate in the world of the
healthy.
The play opens Friday and runs through Dec. 2. Tickets are $22 to $38.

Music Theatre presents ‘Honk’
Music Theatre of Southern California is offering four shows of
“Honk!,” this weekend at The Alex Theatre in Glendale.
The musical is based on the classic “Ugly Duckling” tale by Hans
Christian Andersen, brought to musical life by composer George Stiles and
playwright Anthony Drewe.
Show times are 2 and 8 p.m. today and 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets

Artist shows watercolor portraits at Borders
A reception for the artist is planned for Mary Heussenstamm’s show of
35 watercolor portraits at 2 p.m. Sunday at Borders Glendale, 100 S.
Brand Blvd., Glendale.
She will be signing copies of her book “Watercolor Portraits Painted
on the Streets of Los Angeles.”
The show continues through Tuesday.
Students organize benefit concert for victims of attacks
Four high school students have organized a piano concert of works by
Chopin and Liszt to raise funds today for the New York Police and Fire
Widows and Children’s Benefit Fund.
Titled “An Evening of Music,” the event is dedicated to the American
heroes who perished on Sept. 11. It is organized by Janice Lee of Burbank
High School, Joanne Lim of La Canada High School and Suzie Kim and Lena
Song both of Crescenta Valley High School.
It will be at 7 p.m. in Harbeson Hall at Pasadena City College.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and can be reserved by
calling 249-2481. Donations will also be accepted. Refreshments will be
served after the concert.
All are students of La Crescenta piano teacher Juli Kim, a member of
the Music Teachers Assn. of California.
Brand Library Music series dedicated to world peace
The Brand Library Music Series will be dedicated to world peace in
light of the attack on the United States’ freedom and democratic values.
The library’s new schedule of free concerts begins at 3 p.m. Sunday in
the Brand auditorium.
The ensemble of Australian harpist Carolyn Sykes, cellist Janice Foy
and special guest violinist Leola Wagner will perform tangos, gypsy music
and jazz.
Funding for the concert is by Friends of the Brand Library along with
the Recording Industries’ Music Performance Trust Funds of the
Professional Musicians Local 47.

Kiwanis Club is host for Travelog Series
The La Canada Kiwanis Club is presenting its 41st annual Travelog
Series, beginning with “Mozart in Italy” at 7 tonight at the Flintridge
Preparatory School auditorium, 4543 Crown Ave., La Canada Flintridge.
The films are narrated in person by their producers. Programs are
preceded by barbershop singers.
Other topics are Switzerland on Nov. 10; The Bavarian Black Forest on
Jan 26; The Great Trans-America Train Ride on Feb. 9; Jerusalem on March
16 and The Misty Isles of Scotland on April 6.
Admission is $7. Series tickets are $35. Tickets can be ordered from

Proceeds go to sponsoring the two Key clubs in the local high schools

A Noise Within
produces ‘Pericles’
William Shakespeare’s “Pericles” is being produced by A Noise Within.
Directed by Art Manke, the play continues through Nov. 30.
After the presumed death of his wife and daughter, Pericles, the
Prince of Tyre, embarks on a journey of self-discovery, surviving near
fatal storms at sea and sordid adventures in exotic locales, until almost
mute and immobile, he realizes accepting the misfortunes of life is the
best way to survive them.

‘Trelawny of the Wells’
at A Noise Within
A Noise Within’s first production of its 11th season is “Trelawny of
the Wells,” by Arthur Wing Pinero.
Rose Trelawny, a beautiful young starlet, bids farewell to the theater
(the “Well”) as she prepares for a marriage into a high-society family.
She soon finds, however, that her passion for her life in the theater and
her new life in the upper crust are like oil and water.
After living a short time in her new world, she wants to return to the
theater and finds that she has changed so much, this is no longer a place
for her either.
Directed by Julia Rodriguez Elliott and Geoff Elliott, “Trelawny”
continues through Nov. 25.

‘The Jungle Book’ offers family fun
Colorful characters and memorable songs are promised in Glendale
Centre Theatre’s production of “The Jungle Book,” continuing through Nov.
17.

Artists show works
at Hill Street Cafe
Several local artists are displaying their works at Hill Street Cafe
in La Canada Flintridge for the first time.
Lana Blades of Glendale is showing florals and rustic scenes while
Hilde Jimendez of La Crescenta displays landscapes and abstracts.
Also showing their works are veteran artists Caroline J. Putnam,
featuring “Budgie” paintings and Daniel E. Clarke’s American flag
paintings.
The works will be on display through Sunday. Hill Street Cafe is at

‘En Plein Air’
features residents
Glendale residents who are members of the California Art Club are
displaying their works in the show “En Plein Air” at the Tirage Gallery
in Pasadena.
All the works were painted on location and featured are figure, marine
and traditional landscapes. Exhibiting artists from Glendale are
Catherine Hill, Donald Hildreth, Paulette Lee and Mark Roberts.
Hours are from noon to 5 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday

The Associates of Brand Library and Art Center are showcasing the
works of two Glendale artists in the Looking Glass Display Case at the
gallery front entrance.
Tina Clark shows her original jewelry using beads and other materials
in classical and contemporary designs.
Irena Raulinaitis does printmaking, working in etchings, wood-cuts and
other forms.

The Doctors’ House features Glendale history
The Doctors’ House, tucked inside Brand Park in Glendale, is a
Victorian home in Queen Anne Eastlake-style open to the public from 2 to
4 p.m. Sundays. Built in the 1880s by real estate entrepreneur E.T.
Byram, the house has been restored. Brand Park is at 1601 W. Mountain St., Glendale.
Bolton Hall features early Sunland, Tujunga
Bolton Hall Museum in Tujunga, run by the Little Landers Historical
Society, features historical displays relating to the Sunland and Tujunga
areas. It is open to the public at 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Sundays. Admission
is free. The museum is at 10110 Commerce Ave., Tujunga. For information,

Looking back at the foothills at the Lanterman House
The Lanterman House, owned by the city of La Canada Flintridge, is
operated by the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation and is open to the
public from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and the first and third
Sundays of the month.
The house was built in 1914 by the founding family of La Canada
Flintridge. The city took ownership in 1987 and public tours have been
offered since 1995.

Howard Museum offers history of Burbank
The Gordon R. Howard Museum Complex features exhibits of early
Burbank. Hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Skating is cool fun at Pickwick arena
Pickwick Ice Skating Arena, 1001 Riverside Drive in Burbank, has
public skating, figure skating and ice hockey lessons. It is also
available for private parties.
Public sessions are from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays; 8 to
10 p.m. Saturdays; 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and
8:15 to 9:45 p.m. Wednesdays. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for 17 and
younger, and $3 extra for skate rentals. Call 846-0035.
Equestrian center great for horsing around
The Los Angeles Equestrian Center, 480 Riverside Drive in Burbank,
holds horse events throughout the year but also rents out the animals
seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Horse rentals are $15 for one
hour, $24 for 1 1/2 hours, and $28 for two hours, all with a $15 deposit,
cash only. Private hourlong lessons are $35.
Private parties can take night rides or, for the summer only, sunset
barbecue rides. The sunset rides are also open to the public. To horse

Talk to the animals at the Los Angeles Zoo
The L.A. Zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $8.25
for adults, $5.25 for seniors 65 and older, $3.25 for kids 2 to 12 and
free for kids younger than 2. Parking is free and strollers and
wheelchairs are available to rent. The zoo is at 5333 Zoo Drive, Los

DANCING
Go to Giggles for salsa, merengue
Giggles night club, 215 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale, is offering a
mixture of dancing and salsa lessons. Salsa and merengue dancing is
offered Saturdays with lessons for beginners and advanced from 7:30 to
9:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, dance to house, disco and Spanish rock.
There is a strict dress code. There is a cover charge of $12 Fridaysand

Dance to live music at Sardo’s
Sardo’s, 259 N. Pass Ave. in Burbank, features live blues and jazz

Crazy Jack’s offers country entertainment
Crazy Jack’s, 4311 W. Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank, offers live country
entertainment and free dance lessons.
Entertainment includes live country bands from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Fridays and Saturdays, and 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sundays. Dance lessons are
from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Dimples showcases its customers
Dimples, 3412 W. Olive Ave. in Burbank, serves up some karaoke, Las
Vegas lounge-style. The club presents its Singers Showcase from 9 p.m. to
2 a.m. every night for those willing to croon for a crowd. Choose from
more than 10,000 songs and get a free cassette recording of your
performance.
The club opens its bar at 5 p.m. and starts serving dinner at 6:30
p.m. During show breaks, hit one of two dance floors playing disco, salsa

Glendale’s Rusty Pelican, 300 Harvey Drive in Glendale, serves dinner
and Sunday brunch, but really cooks with its live singing and music.
There’s karaoke from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Wednesdays, live jazz from 7 to
11 p.m. Fridays and live blues from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturdays. For

Swing dancing, karaoke combine at The Mix
The Mix, at 2612 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose, offers karaoke and so much
more. Five nights a week, a DJ spins some tunes for the dance floor.
There’s swing dancing at 9 p.m. Wednesdays with an hourlong lesson before
that, all for $5. Tuesday is Dollar Drink night, with a $2 cover.
Karaoke starts at 9:30 p.m. Thursdays. There are also 12 pool tables
and a pool league, dart boards and a darts league, and the occasional

Jax Bar and Grill offers nightly jazz
Jax Bar and Grill offers live entertainment every night of the week.
