To Jerry Lane:
Your article on Jan. 26, telling the story of “Ellen’s Tree,” was
beautiful. Beautiful because this tree brought courage and love to those
who walked by.
Trees have always been important in my life, starting on an Iowa
homestead. We had two rows of fir trees in back of our house for wind
protection, and oak trees (not California oaks) all around the yard.
One tree supported two long ropes for the swing. We played croquet on
Sunday between the trees. Yes, you guessed it -- my childhood was
wonderful. My older son calls it “picture book.”
I’m glad that you found Ellen’s tree and hope many more will pay her a
visit. Keep writing.
