Former Dodger Jay Johnstone
is Big Strike auctioneer
Former Los Angeles Dodger Jay Johnstone will step up to the plate as
auctioneer at the Boy Scouts’ Big Strike Auction Dinner March 8 at the
Burbank Hilton Hotel.
Funds raised 28th annual live and silent auctions go to the Verdugo
Hills Boy Scout Council serving Burbank, Glendale, La Crescenta and La
Canada Flintridge.
While his successful baseball career spans some 20 years with several
major league teams with which he earned four World Series rings,
Johnstone is most closely associated with the L.A. Dodgers.
Auction Chairman Jim Rabe said more than 200 items will be up for bid
including a pinball machine, one-week vacation for up to six people at
the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and a week at a beach side Carlsbad
condo.
Also offers is an Epicurean Dinner for eight with Scout Council
Executive Director Andrew Messer as maitre’d, Assistant Director Wynne
Ritch as wine steward and Council President Jack Wagner as executive
chef.

Girl Scouts collect
donations for needy
Mt. Wilson Vista Council Girl Scout Troop 555, made up of eighth-grade
girls from La Canada High and Westridge, is working on its Silver Award.
The Silver Award Project is a prelude to the gold Award Project, which is
the highest award in Girl Scouting.
The focus of the project is to collect casual shoes and blankets for
children and families of Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico, as well as to
solicit donations of new socks and shoe laces.
Girls participating are Laura Cutter, Lauren Deutsch, Lindsay Deutsch,
Shannon Guerrero, Alyson Kil, Valerie Lew, Hannah Minter, Katherine
Prendergast, Elisabeth Roybal, Melissa Romo, Alyse Sakai and Lillian Yiu.
Lauren and Lindsay’s grandparents will deliver the items to Mexico
this spring.
Collection boxes are placed around town or they can be picked up by
calling Susie Sakai at 952-0231.
Moulin Rouge event
benefits Cabrini Guild
The Cabrini Literary Guild will present its annual fund-raiser “Moulin
Rouge” on Saturday, March 2, at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.
A silent auction begins the day at 10:30 a.m. The noon luncheon will
be followed by entertainment featuring Don Snyder, singer, actor and
dancer, who will sing selections from musical comedy and French ballads.
A raffle and door prizes will conclude the afternoon.
Marie Urrutia is chairwoman assisted by her committee and President
Gloria Mc Gill.
Tickets are $50. Reservations are required and can be made by calling
244-9815.
Proceeds go to scholarships for Catholic high school students, the
guild’s writing awards program and YWCA’s shelter for victims of domestic
violence.
Guild has American
Girl Fashion Show
Flintridge Guild of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles will be the host
group for the seventh annual American Girl Fashion Show on March 22, 23
and 24 at the Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena.
This event honors the American girl through history as young models
wear historic outfits matching those dresses worn by the dolls they
carry.
There is a Friday evening dinner show and three tea shows at 10 a.m. 1
p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
This year, Molly, the doll from the 1940s, will be featured with a
patriotic theme. Prizes and a boutique add to the fun of this special
event for girls and their families.
Proceeds go to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. For reservations, call

Patrons Club
installs officers
Lois Edwards has accepted her second term as president of the Patrons
Club of Glendale Community College.
The purposes of the club are to provide funds through a major annual
project that are used for scholarships and student financial aid, to
support the activities at Glendale Community College and to make the
community aware of the college and its activities.
Also installed were Margaret Hammond, first vice president; Merry
Franzen, second vice president; Lois Solomon, third vice president;
Shirley Wright, treasurer; Betty Musacco, recording secretary; and Elvera
Yinger, corresponding secretary.
Presidents Advisory
Council gives scholarships
The Presidents Advisory Council of Glendale will have its 35th annual
installation of officers and presentation of 24 scholarships on Monday at
Karoun Restaurant, 1240 S. Glendale Ave.
Stephen Ropfogel will be installed as president. Outgoing president if
Gene Mestel.
The social hour is at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 7. The cost to attend is
