Author Lisa See will present “On Gold Mountain: Writing a Family
History” at Glendale Community College at 1 p.m. on Feb. 28 in Kreider
Hall as the second Annual Lang Lecture.
Admission is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow
the lecture.
See’s “On Gold Mountain: The One Hundred Year Odyssey of My
Chinese-American Family” was a national bestseller and a New York Times
Notable Book of 1995. It traces the journey of See’s great-grandfather,
Fong See, who overcame obstacles at every step to become the 100-year-old
godfather of Los Angeles’ Chinatown and the patriarch of a sprawling
family.
The author was born in Paris but grew up in Los Angeles, spending much
of her time in Chinatown. It was while collecting the details of her
family history that she developed the idea for her first novel, “Flower
Net,” which was published in Oct. 1997.
The story of a murder investigation in today’s China was a national
bestseller, a New York Times Notable Book of 1997, on the Los Angeles
Times Best Books List for that year and was rated the top thriller of the
year by Amazon.com. It featured the characters of investigators Liu Hulan
and David Stark. They also appear in See’s next book “The Interior,”
published in 2000.
See worked as the Publishers Weekly West Coast correspondent for 13
years. As a freelance journalist, her articles have appeared in Vogue,
Self, The New York Times Book Review, The Los Angeles Times Magazine, The
Washington Post Book World and TV Guide.
In 2000, she created an exhibit on the Chinese-American experience for
the Autry Museum of Western Heritage. The exhibit moved to the Arts and
Industry Building at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. last
year.
See has appeared on CNN’s “News Night Update,” KCET -- “Take Five --
Writers in Residence” and “Life & Times” and PBS-TV -- “This is America”
along with many radio interviews.
The GCC Lang Lecture Series takes place annually and was established
in honor of Dr. Veloris Lang, retired dean of letters, arts and sciences.
