BOYS’ TENNIS
Hoover 14, St. Francis 4: No. 1 singles player Sam Tadevosian swept
his sets for the second consecutive match to lead Hoover (2-0) in a
nonleague match against visiting St. Francis (1-1) at Fremont Park on
Thursday.
The freshman didn’t lose a game for the second straight match after
sweeping his sets against Crespi on Tuesday.
St. Francis was led by their No. 2 doubles team of Jon Oh and Yuta
Nakanishi, who won two of their three sets.
Hoover will next play another nonleague league match at 3 p.m. Tuesday
against Valencia.
BOYS’ SWIMMING
Crescenta Valley 131, Alhambra 37: Gaku Ito won the 100-yard freestyle
with a mark of 54 seconds to lead CV (1-0) in a season-opening nonleague
meet at Almansor Park on Thursday.
Peter Lee captured the 10 breastroke, clocking 1:06.38 and teammate
Van Dolan won the 200 individual medley in 2:12.85.
The Falcons will next compete in another nonleague meet against
Newhall Hart at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at College of the Canyons in Valencia.
GIRLS’ SWIMMING
Crescenta Valley 112, Alhambra 51: Jessica Ban and Lauren Sheridan
were double winners for the Falcons (1-0) in a season-opening nonleague
meet at Almansor Park on Thursday.
Ban won the 200 individual medley (2:19.99) and the 100 backstroke
(1:06.91). Sheridan captured the 50 freestyle (26.90) and the 100
butterfly (1:11.12).
The Falcons will next compete in another nonleague meet against
Newhall Hart at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at College of the Canyons in Valencia.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
GCC 15, Chaffey College 7: Led by Vanessa Lira’s grand slam in the
first inning, the Vaqueros had no problem in Wednesday’s Western State
Conference game on the road.
GCC (13-4, 2-1 in conference) scored eight runs in the first to post
the easy victory.
Lira, who now has four home runs on the year, also got the win after
pitching 4 2/3 innings of relief, giving up two runs.
Cassie Acosta and Karen Regalado each tripled and Tiffany Flores added
a double for the Vaqueros. Regalado also added three runs batted in and
former Crescenta Valley graduate Amy Herrera added two RBIs.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
La Canada 3, Glendale Adventist Academy 1: Led by a career-high 41
kills from senior Greg Gaudino, the Spartans posted a 15-9, 12-15, 15-9,
15-10 victory against the Cougars in Tuesday’s season-opener at home.
Ryan Facer had 21 assists for La Canada, which triumphed in Coach Dan
Nicholas’ coaching debut.
SOFTBALL
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 13, Mayfield 1: Jackie Fisher hit a
two-run home run and Caroline Hugar added an run-scoring triple to lead
the Tologs (1-0) in a nonleague game at the Glendale Sports Complex on
Friday.
Flintridge Sacred Heart starting pitcher Adrian Herlache (1-0) struck
out five and allowed one hit in a complete-game effort.
The Tologs will next play another home nonleague game against Pasadena
Poly at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
BASEBALL
Flintridge Prep 16, Buckley 7: Eric Sarkissian hit a pair of two-run
home runs and scored three runs to lead Flintridge Prep (1-0) to a
season-opening nonleague win Friday at Buckley in a game called after 4
1/2 innings because of darkness.
David Hudson, Mike Valdes and Won Park each collected two hits for the
Rebels, who will next play a nonleague game at 6:30 p.m. Monday against
Maranatha at Arcadia City Hall.
Birmingham 6, St. Francis 2: Ricky Valenzuela had a team-high two hits
for visiting St. Francis (0-1) Friday in a pool-play game in the San
Fernando Valley Tournament.
The Golden Knights will meet host Calabasas at 3 p.m. today in another
pool-play tournament game.
