Spartan boys’ track and field team makes history

Edgar Melik-Stepanyan

SOUTH PASADENA -- Finally, something to build a rivalry on between the

La Canada and South Pasadena high boys’ track and field teams.

For 10 years, the Tigers dominated the dual meets, never losing to the

Spartans as they ran off a string of Rio Hondo League titles.

But now, since La Canada defeated the three-time defending league

champions for the first time in a decade, 70-57, Thursday at South

Pasadena High, the Spartans have something to brag about.

And something that gets under the skin of frustrated South Pasadena

runners.

La Canada’s girls’ varsity team lost, 67-60, but it is a big

improvement from last season’s 83-44 deficit.

The Tigers’ sophomore-freshmen boys’ team, which has won three

consecutive league titles, lost, 65-62.

“All of the boys were focused,” said Spartan second-year Coach Shannon

Goods, referring to her varsity squad.

“They came out and performed beyond what we expected of them. All the

boys knew what they had to do.”

Senior Tommy McGuinness carried the Spartans in the field events,

capturing the long, triple and high jump in personal best leaps.

La Canada pole vaulter Brent Cassidy and shot putter Nick Sinclitico

won their respective events, as the Spartans swept the field portion of

the meet.

“They have outstanding athletes,” South Pasadena Coach Erik Mack said.

“They have an outstanding senior class. They gave me trouble when they

were freshmen. They gave me trouble when they were sophomores. They gave

me trouble when they were juniors. And I knew they would give me trouble

again.”

Spartan sprinter Charlie Porter won the 110 high hurlders in 15.9

seconds and the 100 meter race in 10.5 seconds. The junior joined

McGuinness, Patrick Perrigue -- who won the 200 meters -- and Nick

Shupper in winning the 400-meter relay.

South Pasadena’s girls’ team, which has won eight straight league

titles, won six of the 10 track events -- including two by Nicole

Adelstein in the 110 low hurdles in 18 seconds and the 300 intermediate

hurdles in 52.1 -- and three of the five field events.
