SOFTBALL
Temple City 1, La Canada 0: Michelle Krasch’s single past a drawn-in
infield in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Kaci Feld and brought
an end to La Canada’s 34-game Rio Hondo League winning streak Tuesday at
Temple City High.
The Spartans (5-3-1, 4-1 in league) last lost a league game April 20,
1999, a 3-1 setback against South Pasadena at Orange Grove Park.
La Canada still owns a one-game lead over Temple City (11-6, 3-2)
entering Thursday’s home game against South Pasadena.
Kelly Kalish (5-1-1) had her streak of scoreless innings end at 59,
despite surrendering an unearned run and four singles. The senior
right-hander struck out six batters and didn’t walk anybody, extending
her streak without walking a batter to 94 1/3 innings and 340 batters.
Kim Chau had two hits and Ciri Bryan, Danielle Mellin and Morgan
Nakawatase all had hits for the Spartans, who stranded five runners,
including the bases loaded in the fifth.
Glendale 10, Muir 0: Heather Hamasaki tossed a no-hitter with 10
strikeouts and a walk, and belted a triple, a home run and had three runs
batted in as the Nitros posted a 4 1/2-inning victory in Tuesday’s
Pacific League game at home.
Hamasaki’s two-run homer was part of a six-run third inning for
Glendale (9-5, 1-0 in league), which also got a three-run triple from
Priscilla Lopez to spark the rally.
Lopez had two hits, as did Christine Estacio, who also drove in a run.
Audrey Andrade collected her third double of the season and Cristy De
La Rosa also doubled for the Nitros, in addition to scoring two runs.
Heather Francis also had a hit for Kris Kohlmeier’s squad, which had
11 hits and finished off the Mustangs in 62 minutes.
Glendale travels to Arcadia at 3:15 p.m. Thursday for an important
league game.
BASEBALL
Hoover 12, Muir 0: Tito Cruz continued his assault on opposing
pitchers, going two for two with a double, a triple, four runs scored and
a run batted in as the Tornadoes cruised in Tuesday’s Pacific League game
on the road.
Hoover (7-4, 3-3 in league) collected 14 hits in support of junior
pitcher Max Hibbs (4-1), who tossed six strong innings, surrendering
three hits and four walks, striking out 12.
Cruz came on to throw a 10-pitch seventh-inning -- including nine
strikes -- which resulted in three strikeouts.
Philip Estrella went two for four with a double and an RBI, and Vahan
Kopalyan and Marvin Serrano both went two for three.
Serrano added two runs and drove in another for the Tornadoes, who
host Pasadena in another league game at 3:15 p.m. Friday.
Crescenta Valley 20, Pasadena 1: The Falcons took it to the Bulldogs
on Tuesday at Pasadena High in a Pacific League game.
CV (11-1, 6-0 in league) pounded 16 hits and used a seven-run fourth
inning to blow the game open.
Trevor Bell pitched three innings to get the win, improving to 4-0.
The freshman also slugged his third home run of the season.
Also hitting his third home run was Aaron McGuinness. The junior was
three for six with four runs batted in.
Kyle Barrett doubled twice and throve in three runs. Sophomore Nigel
Orozco added four RBIs and scored twice, going three for five.
St. Francis 4, Alhambra 1: Sophomore Alex Gonzalez tossed a one-hitter
with six strikeouts to carry the Golden Knights to Monday’s victory in
the San Gabriel Valley Easter Classic Tournament at Nogales High.
St. Francis (6-6) gave Gonzalez (3-2) all the run support he needed in
the second inning and Alhambra (8-3), which committed five errors, could
only muster a sixth-inning run.
Mike Martinez doubled for the Golden Knights, who had six hits.
BOYS’ GOLF
La Canada 181, Monrovia 212: Umar Khan shot a one-under-par 33 Tuesday
to lead the Spartans in a Rio Hondo League match at La Canada Country
Club.
David Armstrong carded a 35 and Brandon Shin fired a 36 for La Canada
(8-4, 4-1 in league).
Shin, Brendan Shannon and Phil Horwith will represent La Canada in the
Oak Park Invitational, which begins at noon today at Sterling Hills Golf
Course in Camarillo.
La Canada will next play another league match at 3 p.m. Thursday
against Temple City at La Canada Country Club.
CV 207, Glendale 224: The Falcons improved to 12-4, 5-2 in Pacific
League with Monday’s win at the Oakmont Country Club.
CV’s Scott Bayles was the led low-medalist with a par-37, shooting
three birdies. Teammate Brian Yi was right behind him, shooting a 38.
Michael Park was the Falcons’ third-best contributor, with a 42.
Park’s finish matched that of Glendale’s (3-3 in league) top finisher,
Shawn Chamberlin.
CV’s Joe Agnone shot a 44 and John Denny shot a 46.
For the Nitros, Kyle Marshall shot a 44, Reana Yun shot a 45, Sooji
Cho shot a 46 and Jin Cho shot a 47.
