BOYS’ SWIMMING
Glendale 124, Hoover 44: The Nitros had little trouble in Wednesday’s
Pacific League meet at Glendale High.
Glendale managed several impressive performances, highlighted by that
of Carlos Lopez, a recent junior varsity call-up, who won the 100-yard
butterfly in 1 minute 4.11 seconds.
Matt Hahn won two individual races (100, 200 freestyles) and was a
part of the winning 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay,
along with Lars Speer, who won the 50 freestyle. Peter Sriployrung also
swam a leg in two winning relays and brought home an individual victory
in the 200 individual medley (2:20.26).
GIRLS’ SWIMMING
Glendale 136, Hoover 31: Like the Nitro boys, Glendale (5-2, 2-2 in
league) had no trouble in its Pacific League win Wednesday at home.
The Nitros were sparked by an impressive 500-yard freestyle sweep, as
Cindy Ramos, Teni Karimian and Zainab Naji finished 1-2-3.
Erica Arreola also had a good day, winning the 100 breastroke in 1
minute 17.32 seconds, and taking second in the 200 individual medley, in
2:40.22.
BASEBALL
Loyola 9, St. Francis 4: The Golden Knights (7-10, 1-6 in league)
couldn’t manufacture a win Tuesday at Loyola High. St. Francis’ lone
bright spot was Matt Hirsh, who went two for four, drove in all four
runs, hit two home runs, his fifth and sixth of the season.
Alex Gonzalez (3-4) took the loss for St. Francis, despite striking
out seven in seven innings.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Crespi 3, St. Francis 1: A shorthanded Golden Knight team couldn’t
hold an early lead Tuesday at Crespi, losing the Mission League match,
15-12, 5-15, 2-15, 9-15 to fall to 8-6,3-5 in league.
St. Francis’ Brendan Collins tallied 40 assists in the loss, and Tim
Smiland had 16 kills. Tim Dietrach and Andy Frazee both finished with 10
kills, with Dietrach getting three aces.
The Golden Knights’ next contest is against Loyola on Thursday at St.
Francis.
