LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- A multicultural celebration is blooming this
weekend at Descanso Gardens with garden tours translated into several
languages and musical entertainment representing various cultures.
A highlight of the activities is the San Fernando Valley Rose Society
Rose Show featuring members displaying and selling roses from 1 to 4 p.m.
today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
Guided walking tours will be translated into Korean at 10 and 11:30
a.m., Japanese at 10:30 a.m. and noon and Chinese at noon and 3 p.m.
today.
Costumed dancers of the Korean Dance Academy of Los Angeles and
Glendale will perform dances of their native land at 1 p.m. also today at
the Under the Oaks Theater.
On Sunday, guided language tours will be in Spanish at 11:30 a.m. and
2 p.m. and Armenian at noon and 2:30 p.m.
The dance performance at 1 p.m. Sunday will feature costumed
Djanbazian Dance Academy students performing traditional Armenian dances.
Lilacs is the theme for the art exhibit continuing through May 9 at
the Boddy House Gallery, on the Descanso grounds. This extraordinary
collection of works by 13 artists depicts this favorite Descanso flower
in oils, watercolors and acrylics.
Lilac artists participating are Ruth Basler Burr, Carole Buss, Shirley
Flynn, Linda DuPas, Dory Grade, Patricia Kertes, Margot Lennartz, Fealing
Lin, Gerane Mooney, Nancy Shirshke, Kendra Page, Vicky Thomas and Pat
Wiley.
Grade and three other artists will have additional exhibits at the
gallery. Returning for her 28th Descanso exhibit, Grade shows a new
collection of watercolors, acrylics, drawings, notecards and
prints/Giclees, all inspired by nature’s “Timeless Renewal.”
Lorraine Haubold, Nina Kellogg and Catherine Reece will exhibit
ceramics that illustrate the variety of ways clay can be molded into art
by gifted artists.
The gallery, in the historic home of Descanso founder E. Manchester
Boddy, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Gallery visits are free with
garden admission.
Descanso Gardens is at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Canada Flintridge. The
gardens are open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Parking is free.
Admission fees are $5 for adults; $3 for seniors and students; $1 for

Car club has Chevy Night
at Bob’s Big Boy
The Road’ers Car Club members will be heading down Glenoaks Boulevard
for their monthly Cruise In car show from 6 to 9 tonight at Bob’s Big
Boy, 1407 W. Glenoaks Blvd., Glendale.
“Chevy Night” is the theme, and the owner of the best Chevy will take
home a special trophy.
In addition, other trophies will be awarded in several other
categories for hot rods, muscle cars, special interest vehicles, or
classic cars. A DJ will be playing music, and there will be a raffle and
50/50 cash drawings.

‘Over the River’ opens
at Centre Theatre
The Broadway comedy, “Over The River And Through The Woods,” opened
this week at Glendale Centre Theatre.
The play was written by Joe DiPietro whom critics are calling the new
Neil Simon, and is the newest play Centre Theatre has produced. It was
introduced in New York in 1998 and ran for two years.
It’s the heartwarming story of how a family will go to outrageous
lengths to keep their grandson from taking a lucrative job in another
state.
Directing this production is George Strattan.
The play continues through May 25. Tickets range from $13 to $16. For

Group’s CD release
party at Club Lush
Moe Jones will have its CD release party for “Cup of Joe” from 7 to 11
p.m. Sunday at Club Lush in Glendale.
Lead singer Michelle Holmes categorizes the group’s music as
Alternative Retro, as its original songs blend elements of rock ‘n’ roll,
jazz, folk and blues.
Also appearing are Sean Wiggins, Kelly’s Lot and Sanaiya.

Glendale College comedy
ends run this weekend
“Three Friendships, Two Urns and a Bird,” an irreverent comedy written
by Rideaux A. Baldwin and presented by the Glendale Community College
Theatre Arts Department, finishes its run this weekend in the GCC
Auditorium Studio Theatre.
Ed Douglas is the director. He has taught theater classes at Glendale
College for 15 years and is on the faculty at the California State Summer
School for the Arts and the American InterContinental University. He is
also a fight director for stage and screen.
Shows are at 8 tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday.
There is limited seating and no late seating in the intimate Studio
Theatre. Reservations are strongly recommended. Tickets are $7 general
admission, $5 for students and seniors and $3 each for groups of 10 or

The show contains adult themes and depictions of drug use and parrot

Orchestra previews
Carnegie Hall tour
Jeffrey Kahane and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra will give a
preview of its Carnegie Hall tour with a performance at 8 tonight at The
Alex Theatre in Glendale.
The program features German bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff, who will
sing the Bach Cantata BWV 56 (Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen), as
well as Ravel’s Don Quichotte a Dulcinee.
Quasthoff also will accompany the orchestra on its East Coast tour
culminating at Carnegie Hall.
Also on the program are the Haydn Symphony No. 102 in B-flat major and
the Variaciones Concertantes by Ginastera.
Tickets are $13 to $55 and may be purchased at the box office. The

Community Concerts
offering memberships
The Glendale Community Concert Assn. is continuing its membership
drive for the new concert season, which will be its 50th anniversary
year.
Membership includes admission to concerts presented by affiliated

Featured in the next season will be Alborada, Sept. 8; Trio Voronezh,

The final program for this year’s season will be a piano concert by
James Lent on May 12. The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Glendale

ART EXHIBITS
Sandy Rooney of La Crescenta is showing her art work “Opus 3” during a
show titled “An Affair With Color” sponsored by Women Painters West at
the VIVA Gallery in Northridge.
The juror was Gordon Fuglie, director of the Laband Art Gallery at
Loyola Marymount University.
Gallery hours are from noon to 4 p.m today and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

DANCING
Go to Giggles for salsa, Latin House
Giggles night club, 215 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale, is offering a
mixture of dancing and salsa lessons on Fridays. Salsa and merengue
dancing are offered on the lower level on Friday and Saturday. On the
main floor, Spanish rock and pop are played on Friday, while Latin house,
trance and Top 40 are offered on Saturday. There is a strict dress code.

‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’
continues in repertory
Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labour’s Lost” runs in repertory with “Bus Stop”
and “The Wild Duck” produced by A Noise Within.
Directed by resident artist Michael Winters, the play is about four
young noblemen, led by the King of Navarre, who vow to lead a monastic
lifestyle only to be tempted by four lovely French women.
The play continues through May 11. Show times and days vary. Tickets

‘Bus Stop’ produced by A Noise Within
“Bus Stop,” a sweet comedy from the pen of William Inge, is being
produced by A Noise Within through May 18 in repertory with “Love’s
Labour’s Lost” and “The Wild Duck.” Resident artist Sabin Epstein
directs.
A snowstorm grounds a bus of travelers overnight at Grace’s Cafe in
Kansas City, including Cherie and a young rodeo star named Bo. He wants
to sweep her off to Montana and marry her, but finds he must smooth his
ways to win her over.

‘The Wild Duck’
continues run
A Noise Within’s “The Wild Duck” continues through May 19 in
repertoire with “Love’s Labour’s Lost” and “Bus Stop.”
Hjalmar Ekdal believes he is content, living life as a struggling
photographer with his father, wife Gina and daughter Hedvig, until he
becomes reacquainted with an old childhood friend. Gregers Werle manages
to raise doubts about everything Hjalmar holds dear and he must decide if
he is capable of facing the truths about his life.

Little Mermaid’ at Centre Theatre
Glendale Centre Theatre’s children’s production of “The Little

Centre Theatre adds two performances of ‘Joseph’
Two performances have been added for Glendale Centre Theatre’s
production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at 8 p.m. on
Monday and Tuesday.
Robert Marra plays Joseph. Cassie Larocca is the Narrator and Lance
Zitron is the Pharaoh.

‘Snow White’ continues
at Falcon Theatre
“Snow White,” a new version of the Grimm Brothers old classic, is
continuing at The Falcon Theatre.
It was adapted by Thorin Alexander with direction by Hope Alexander.
It blends all the story’s favorite characters with a new twist.
Hope has worked from Costa Mesa at the South Coast Repertory Theatre
all the way to Paris. She has received multiple DramaLogue and Critic’s
Circle awards.
Playwright Thorin’s credits include dramaturg on “The Last of Mrs.
Lincoln” for director Art Manke at the El Portal Theatre Center and
dramaturgical assistant on “Pericles” for A Noise Within in Glendale.
Tickets are $10 and reservations can be made by calling 955-8101. Show
times are 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday through June 16. The

MUSEUMS
The Doctors’ House features Glendale history
The Doctors’ House, tucked inside Brand Park in Glendale, is a
Victorian home in Queen Anne Eastlake-style open to the public from 2 to
4 p.m. Sundays. Built in the 1880s by real-estate entrepreneur E.T.
Byram, the house has been restored. Brand Park is at 1601 W. Mountain St., Glendale.
Bolton Hall features early Sunland, Tujunga
Bolton Hall Museum in Tujunga, run by the Little Landers Historical
Society, features historical displays relating to the Sunland and Tujunga
areas. It is open to the public at 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Sundays. Admission
is free. The museum is at 10110 Commerce Ave., Tujunga. For information,

Looking back at the foothills at the Lanterman House
The Lanterman House, owned by the city of La Canada Flintridge, is
operated by the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation and is open to the
public from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and the first and third
Sundays of the month.
The house was built in 1914 by the founding family of La Canada
Flintridge. The city took ownership in 1987, and public tours have been
offered since 1995.

Jax offers supper, jazz every night of the week
Jax Bar and Grill is a supper club offering live jazz every night of
the week.
Show times are 8 p.m. to midnight on Monday, 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tuesday
through Thursday; 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 7:30 to
11:30 p.m. Sunday. Happy Hour Jazz is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday

Rusty Pelican cooks with live music
Glendale’s Rusty Pelican, 300 Harvey Drive in Glendale, serves dinner
and Sunday brunch, but really cooks with its live singing and music.
There’s karaoke from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Wednesdays, live jazz from 7 to
11 p.m. Fridays and live blues from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturdays. For

Swing dancing, karaoke combine at The Mix
The Mix, at 2612 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose, offers Top 40 music played
by a disc jockey on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday. On Wednesday, there is
swing dancing instruction from 8 to 9 p.m. followed by swing dancing from
9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Karaoke is offered beginning at 9:30 p.m. on
Thursday. There are also 12 pool tables and a pool league, dart boards
and a darts league, and the occasional live music band. Cover is $3 on

ATTRACTIONS
Skating is cool fun at Pickwick arena
Pickwick Ice Skating Arena, 1001 Riverside Drive in Burbank, has
public skating, figure skating and ice hockey lessons. It is also
available for private parties.
Public sessions are from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays; 8 to
10 p.m. Saturdays; 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and
8:15 to 9:45 p.m. Wednesdays. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for 17 and
younger, and $3 extra for skate rentals. Call 846-0035.
Equestrian center great for horsing around
The Los Angeles Equestrian Center, 480 Riverside Drive in Burbank, has
horse events throughout the year but also rents out the animals from 8
a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Horse rentals are $20 for one hour, $30
for 1 1/2 hours, and $35 for two hours, all with a $15 deposit, cash only. Private hourlong lessons are $35.
Private parties can take night rides or, for the summer only, sunset
barbecue rides. The sunset rides are also open to the public. To horse

Talk to the animals at the Los Angeles Zoo
The L.A. Zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $8.25
for adults, $5.25 for seniors 65 and older, $3.25 for kids 2 to 12 and
free for kids younger than 2. Parking is free and strollers and
wheelchairs are available to rent. The zoo is at 5333 Zoo Drive, Los
Angeles. Call (323) 644-6400. It is closed on Christmas Day.
Moonlight Rollerway is the place to skate
Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale offers skating for children and adults
throughout the week.
Admission ranges from $4.50 to 6.75. There is a $2 skate rental fee or
skaters can bring their own in-line or regular skates.
There is a session for children 12 and under and their parents from 10
a.m. to noon each Saturday.
Public sessions are from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1:30
to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Adult Disco Night for those 18 and older
is from 8:30 to 11 p.m. on Monday. Old-timers Night with live organ music
is from 8 to 10:30 p.m. each Tuesday.
Skaters receive a discount on the public session from 8 to 10:30 p.m.
each Wednesday. Adult admission is $5 with $2 skate rental. The rink is
reserved for private parties on Thursday.
