Three Burrows scholars announced

Marshall Allen

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The three recipients of the 2002 Christopher

A. Burrows Memorial Scholarship were selected because they love life as

Burrows did.

Burrows was a graduate of Crescenta Valley High School, attorney and

active community volunteer. A father of four, Burrows died in January

1999 from a malignant brain tumor.

The $1,500 scholarships will be awarded to Meghan O’Kane of Flintridge

Sacred Heart Academy; Christine Rabe of Crescenta Valley High School and

Scott Moura of La Canada High School at an awards presentation following

the May 21 Christopher Burrows Memorial Golf and Tennis Tournament.

“Chris loved kids and loved to encourage kids,” his widow Christine

said. “The scholarship is a way of recognizing the outstanding kids we

have in this community and encouraging them.”

O’Kane said it’s an honor to receive the scholarship because of

Burrows’ character.

“I feel that he represented a lot of the things that I try to myself,”

she said.

O’Kane, who will attend MIT in the fall, said she shared Burrows’

interest in music, academics and athletics.

Rabe said she’s applied for several scholarships to fund her

education, but that this was one she really connected with because of

Burrows’ “zest for life, and love for his family and community,” she

said.

For Burrows’ mother, Freddie Burrows, the scholarships and memorial

fund are ways her sons name lives on.

“It’s a very wonderful way to have him remembered,” she said.

The fund, which now has more than $70,000, is also tangible evidence

of the incredible support the community has given to her and her

children, Christine Burrows said.
