Car fire spreads to brush; no injuries
NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- A car fire on the north Glendale (2) Freeway
on Tuesday morning spread to nearby brush but was extinguished in
minutes.
The driver was not in the car when it caught fire at about 8:25
a.m. Tuesday near the junction of the Glendale (2) and the Pasadena
(210) freeways.
No injuries were reported.

Housing authority nominated for award
GLENDALE CITY HALL -- The Glendale Housing Authority has been
nominated for a national award honoring superior housing and
community development programs that assist low- and moderate-income
residents.
The National Assn. of Housing and Redevelopment Officials
nominated the authority’s Section 8 open enrollment program for a
2002 Award of Excellence. The enrollment program was recognized for
attracting ethnic groups by using the Internet, the city’s
government access channel and a computer point system to determine
housing preference.
The award will be handed out July 11, during the association’s
annual summer conference in New York.

Scholarship honors late GCC faculty member
NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- A plaque honoring the late Virginia Nelson
will be unveiled at the Glendale Community College Adult Community
Training Center today at 10 a.m.
The first winner of the Virginia Nelson scholarship will also be
introduced.
Virginia Nelson was the chairwoman of GCC’s non-credit business
division from 1962 to 1992. She created and developed many of the
noncredit instructional pro- grams, like computer applications
classes.
Nelson died in June, 2001. She was the first faculty member in
the noncredit program to have full-time tenure track status. She
became noncredit business division chairwoman in 1979 and held that
position until she retired in 1992.
