Flintridge Sacred Heart falls in shootout

The Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy girls’ soccer team fell in a

shootout against Simi Valley Royal in Saturday’s quarterfinal match

of the 35th L.A. Watts Summer Games at Cerritos College.

Despite playing without returning players Hannah Hand, Natalie

Hodge, Erin Marshall and Kate Mitchell, and talented newcomers Lauren

Boustos and Courtney West, the Tologs still managed to tie the

Highlanders, 1-1, before falling on penalty kicks, 8-7.

It marked the second straight year Flintridge Sacred Heart bowed

out of the L.A. games via shootout, losing to Santa Monica in the

quarterfinals last summer.

Trailing, 1-0, after the first of two 25-minute halves, the Tologs

finally tied the match with 10 minutes remaining in regulation as

Katie Woods scored on an assist from returning News-Press All-Area

first-team honoree Jackie Fisher.

Both teams converted on their first seven penalty kicks, before

the Highlanders blocked Flintridge Sacred Heart’s attempt in the

eighth round.
