Gas leak reroutes students

Share

A construction worker backed a vehicle into a 4-inch gas pipe

Wednesday at Crescenta Valley High School, causing a gas leak that

took about an hour to contain, officials said.

Deputies from the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station were alerted

of the leak at 11:30 a.m. and blocked off La Crescenta, Prospect and

Community Avenues until officials from the Los Angeles County Fire

Department could turn it off, Sgt. Don Hudalla said.

At Crescenta Valley High School, students had to be rerouted as

they went to their summer school classes.

“The kids were real cooperative,” Co-principal Gary Talbert said.

“It was fairly major. I was standing about 150 feet away, and you

could smell it.”

Talbert added that he was pleased at the response of the fire and

sheriff’s departments.

The pipe was located near the graphic arts building. The gas would

be turned back on after The Gas Co. fixed the pipe, Hudalla said.
