GCC gets all jazzed up
Nearly 2,000 jazz fans flocked to the campus of Glendale Community
College on Saturday for the Glendale Kiwanis 2002 Jazz & Art
Festival. The 2nd annual, 11-hour festival featured mostly Dixieland,
New Orleans’ style jazz from 15 bands. The Yankee Wailers, the San
Fernando Valley Banjo Band, the Titanic Jazz band, Crazy Rhythm Hot
Society Orchestra with Jeff Gilbert and Lisa Haley’s Zydekats were
just some of the groups who performed at the festival. Some people
took to dancing on wood dance floors at most of the six performance
areas in the center of GCC’s campus. Band attire ranged from Hawaiian
shirts to slacks, wing tip shoes and white spats and suspenders. All
proceeds -- roughly $15,000 -- will go toward Glendale Kiwanis
supported programs for children and seniors. Those who attended were
also treated to Louisiana crab cakes, pan fried catfish, andouille
stuffed pork loin and sweet potato pie with pralines.
