Hirsh competes at AAU Nationals

St. Francis High graduate Matt Hirsh recently finished competing

with his Van Nuys Thunder travel baseball team at the 32-team Amateur

Athletic Union Division I 18-and-under National Championship at Terry

Park in Fort Myers, Fla.

Hirsh -- a News-Press All-Area first-team selection -- pitched the

Thunder to a 7-1 win against Naples Select on Sunday, scattering two

hits and an unearned run in a complete-game effort, lifting his team

into the championship round.

Unfortunately for Hirsh and his teammates -- who lost to Louisiana

All-Star baseball, 9-2, in their opener before rebounding to beat the

Sacramento Cannons, 7-2 -- they lost all three games in their

championship pool Monday and Tuesday.

The Thunder dropped a 13-8 decision to Tallahassee Baseball and

then followed with setbacks to Southwest Florida Baseball (9-7) and

Denver Rox (9-8).

In the game against Denver, Hirsh belted a three-run home run that

measured more than 400 feet.
