When she took her first calligraphy class in La Canada Flintridge
24 years ago, Burbank resident Sylvia Kowal hoped it would improve
her handwriting.
“It has not!” she emphasized, but she has continued to take
classes and workshops at Cal State Los Angeles, UCLA and Cerritos
Community College.
“Calligraphy is strictly a hobby with me,” she said. “I enjoy
lettering and sharing it with friends. I like to letter on
unconventional items, my garden umbrella and large flower pots.”
Her banner, called “Human Relations,” done in Textura letters in
acrylic inks on canvas, is on display along with many other artists
in the “Outside the Lines” calligraphy show at Brand Library and Art
Galleries in Brand Park. It is the 13th biennial exhibit of the
Society for Calligraphy Southern California, and it continues through
Sept. 14.
Kowal graduated from John Burroughs High School and Cal State
Northridge and did graduate work and received her teaching
credential from UC Berkeley. She taught home economics, art,
calligraphy and the yearbook class at Toll Middle School in Glendale.

session and several semesters at the Burbank Adult School.
