Descanso to visit another garden
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- A trip to Lotusland is being offered by
Descanso Gardens.
Lotusland is a botanical garden in Montecito and has an Italian
and aloe garden on its grounds. It was created by former opera singer
Ganna Walska.
The tour is from 10:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 21. Reservations are
required by Friday. The cost is $80 per person and includes
transportation.
Participants should meet at Descanso, 1418 Descanso Drive.

Exotic fish topic of class
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- A koi expert will be making an appearance
at Descanso Gardens to share his knowledge on the exotic fish.
Phil Ishuzi will present information on how to care for the fish,
its history and classification. He will also provide names of other
fish that can live with koi. The class is from 10 a.m. to noon Sept.
14 at the gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive. Registrations are requested,
and the cost is $13 per person.

Local woman appointed superior court judge
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Resident Charlaine Olmedo has been
appointed a judge to the Los Angeles County Superior Court by Gov.
Gray Davis.
Olmedo has worked for the U.S. Attorney’s office on the organized
crime strike force since 1994. She is also a deputy district attorney
for the county of Los Angeles.
Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s office, Olmedo was a deputy
district attorney in Los Angeles where she prosecuted gang related
homicides in the District Attorney’s hardcore gang unit.
Olmedo graduated from Loyola Law School. She fills the seat
vacated by Judge Elvira Austin, who is retiring.

Solar panel decision delayed
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The La Canada Flintridge City Council
unanimously decided to give a local dentist more time to work out a
plan for solar panel installation on his business.
Keith Serxner will have until the council meeting Oct. 7 to meet
with city planners, members of the Design Commission and independent
engineers to come up with a way to install the panels in an
aesthetically pleasing way.
Serxner had proposed to install the panels to the Design
Commission but the request was denied based on the aesthetic
appearance of the panels. Serxner appealed the ruling at Tuesday’s
meeting.

School to host chamber mixer
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The La Canada Flintridge Chamber of
Commerce and Community Assn. is holding its September mixer at St.
Francis High School.
Participants will get a chance to see some of the finished
construction projects at the school. A recital in the new performing
arts center will also be given at 7 p.m. The mixer is from 5:30 to 8
p.m. Sept. 19. The cost to attend is $5 for chamber members and $8
for nonmembers.

Ballet, tap dancing taught to children
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Young children can learn ballet basics
through a fall ballet course at the Roger Barkley Community Center.
Children 3 to 5 will learn basic ballet and tap-dancing skills, as
well as basic tumbling techniques.
The course is taught by Center Stage Dance Academy, and is from
3:15 to 4 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Thursday through Oct. 17. The
cost is $95 per student.

Church remembers Sept. 11 attacks
MONTROSE -- The Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church is
holding a special service to mark the one-year anniversary of the
Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The service will be a prayer service of remembrance and hope, and
led by church Pastor Mark Huntington and Tae Kim, pastor of One Love
United Methodist Church.
The church sanctuary will also be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wednesday for prayer and meditation.
The service begins at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The church is at 2700
Montrose Ave.

Local agency teaches CPR
GLENDALE -- Caring for breathing emergencies in infants and
children will be the topic of an infant and child CPR class offered
by the Glendale-Crescenta Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross on
Monday.
The class includes video and lecture sessions, skills practice
with mannequins and a written test. Students who complete the course
will be certified in infant and child CPR for one year.
The class is from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Monday at the chapter, 1501 S.
Brand Blvd.

Gardens to have pumpkins for sale
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The Harvest Bonanza kicks off Sept. 21 at
Descanso Gardens. Pumpkins and flowers with an autumn theme will be
available for purchase for home and garden decoration. The sale
begins at 10 a.m. Sept. 21 and runs through Sept. 30.
It will be held in the gift shop at the gardens, 1418 Descanso
Drive. Gift shop hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 10
a.m. to 4:45 p.m. weekends.
