Michelle Greco (Crescenta Valley, 1998) senior guard, UCLA women’s

basketball -- Greco’s UCLA career had to end sometime. It just

finished a little sooner than she expected.

When the NCAA Division I women’s basketball Tournament pairings

were announced Sunday, the Bruins were nowhere to be found. The

Bruins’ chances of playing in the tournament were hurt when the NCAA

selection committee chose seven Big East teams, six Big Ten squads

and five Conference USA programs, eliminating several of the

at-large bids, which the Bruins had hoped to get.

But the Bruins (18-11) could still play in the Women’s National

Invitational Tournament, right?

Wrong.

The WNIT contacted UCLA Coach Kathy Olivier last week, but she

didn’t want to be considered for the tournament.

Greco’s days in a UCLA uniform are done, but her collegiate

career isn’t. The Pacific-10 Conference scoring and steals leader was

selected to play in the sixth annual Women’s Basketball Coaches Assn.

All-Star Challenge on April 4 at Georgia Tech. The game will feature

17 of the top NCAA Division I players, as well as athletes from

Division II, III and NAIA schools.

Greco averaged 18.9 points and 2.89 steals per game this year.

Sinnamonn Garrett (Crescenta Valley, 2000) junior guard, New

Mexico State women’s basketball -- Garrett continued to garner

accolades, as she was chosen first-team All-Sun Belt Conference.

But the Aggies (16-12) had their season come to an end when they

lost to Arkansas State, 64-60, in the second round of the conference

tournament. In that game, Garrett -- who was named conference player

of the week twice this season -- had 20 points.

Garrett averaged 16.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game this year.

Garrett led the nation in three-point field-goal percentage,

shooting 49.6% from beyond the arc.

Amy Brunton (Crescenta Valley, 2002) freshman goalkeeper,

Hartwick College women’s water polo -- After losing three

consecutive matches, Hartwick College has responded strong, winning

its past four, all of which came in the Collegiate Water Polo Assn.

New York Region Tournament.

It defeated Iona College, 10-6, to start the tournament March 8.

It also earned 16-13 and 16-2 victories against Wagner College and

Utica College, respectively, later that day. On March 9, Hartwick

easily defeated Utica again, this time, 20-3.

In 13 matches this season, Brunton has tallied 111 saves and

surrendered 98 goals.

Hartwick (10-8) will resume play in the tournament March 29 when

it plays Marist College.
