As the L.A. Kings recently took on the Edmonton Oilers, Glendale

resident Dr. James V. Luck Jr., president, CEO and medical director

of Orthopaedic Hospital, performed the ceremonial puck drop to kick

off Staples Center’s first Orthopaedic Hospital Night, benefiting

charity care programs for children with crippling disorders.

During the first period, Luck, Mary Schmitz, executive director of

the Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital Foundation, and 17-year-old

patient ambassador Melissa Sanchez were presented with a check from

Tracy Hartman, vice president of client services for AEG/Staples.

The check represents funds raised from corporate sponsorships and

a silent auction, featuring L.A. Kings jerseys, allowing Orthopaedic

Hospital to continue providing medical care to children with

crippling conditions, regardless of their families’ ability to pay.

Two Glendale women received community service awards from the

California Parks and Recreation Society District XIV at its awards

and installation luncheon at the Oakwood Communities North Clubhouse

in Toluca Lake.

Gladys Wymore and Doyle Kutch were nominated by Nello Iacono,

director of Parks Recreation and Community Services Division of

Glendale.

award for their service to the Arbor Day Program and the Casa Adobe

de San Rafael.
