Michelle Greco signed a free-agent contract with the WNBA’s Cleveland
Rockers on May 3.
Her stay at Cleveland didn’t last long, though. The Crescenta
Valley High graduate was waived Friday.
Cleveland has 19 players, including seven guards, remaining on its
roster. Clubs must trim their rosters to 11 by May 21, one day before
the start of the regular season.
Greco’s chances of landing a roster spot look slim. None of the
other teams in the league have less than 14 players on their roster.
The Rockers’ team is filled with quality guards. Helen Darling
returns as the starting point guard. Merlakia Jones and Betty Lennox
will join Darling in the backcourt. Cleveland won the Eastern
Conference in 2001.
None of the 14 WNBA franchises selected Greco in the April 25
three-round draft. Greco has said that she plans on playing in Italy
this season, where she can get dual citizenship.
In her senior year at UCLA, Greco led the Pacific-10 Conference in scoring (18.9 per game) and steals (2.8 per game) for the second time
in her career. The two-time All-Pac-10 first-team honoree finished
her tenure at UCLA as the program’s sixth all-time scoring leader
(1,707 points).
She was also second all-time in steals in the Pac-10 (288).
