Two new Kiwanis clubs have been formed to reflect the needs of the
growing Filipino American community in Glendale. Today, the column
will cover the new Kiwanis Club of Fil-Am Glendale. Next month, the
new Kiwanis Club of the Verdugo Hills will be featured.
The Fil-Am club is developing its plans for social action,
secretary Laila Santos said. Three likely activities will be to help
Filipino American children in the area through academic and social
mentoring, raise money for poor children in the Philippines and to
raise Filipino cultural awareness among Filipino American children in
the area.
Other officers are Ruby de Vera, president; Nini Maldonado,
president-elect; Lydia Soriano, first vice president; Maureen
Cagatao, second vice president; and Nelly Costanios, treasurer.
The Kiwanis Club of Fil-Am Glendale meets at 7 p.m. on the second
and fourth Thursday of each month at Max’s of Manila, 313 W.
Broadway. For more information, call Laila Santos at 956-1361.
LIONS GIVE SCHOLARSHIPS TO EXTRAORDINARY STUDENTS
At its June 12 meeting, the Northwest Glendale Lions Club
presented three $1,000 scholarships to Edelmira Sideos, a student at
Glendale Community College, and Carla Abeyta and David Ramirez,
students at Hoover High School who plan to attend GCC. Ross Adams, a
past president, said the club has given more than $50,000 in
scholarships during its 17-year history.
What makes these students unusual is their determination to
overcome disabilities. Edelmira is blind in one eye and has limited
vision in the other. She intends to be a teacher. Carla has a
learning disability that affects reading and writing but has
maintained good grades throughout high school. She aspires to be a
nurse. David suffers from muscular dystrophy and wants to be an
animator.
The Northwest Glendale Lions Club meets at 12:15 p.m. Thursdays at
Oakmont Country Club, 3100 Country Club Drive. For more information,
call Ross Adams at 243-4458.
