LITTLE LEAGUE SECTION 2 TOURNAMENT
Major Baseball
CV 1, El Monte American 0: CV only collected three hits in Friday
night’s Section 2 Tournament opener, but it was the combined pitching
effort of Jacob Hoogenhuizen and Lehne and a strong effort on defense
that lifted Ashby’s squad past the District 18 champion at Rosamond
Little League Field.
El Monte American (5-3) -- which lost to San Marino, 8-4, in
Saturday’s second-chance bracket game -- left five runners on base,
including second and third in the second inning and another at third
in the fifth.
El Monte American -- which had won seven sectional titles since
1984 -- also had a runner thrown at the plate in the first after its
leadoff hitter collected a triple.
CV (5-1) scored its only run in the second as Carlo Monasterio
tripled and Ryan Eberhart drove him in with a single.
From there, it was all Hoogenhuizen and Lehne (1-1), as the tandem
combined to allow two hits, two walks and record seven strikeouts.
Pita had the only other hit for CV.
9- And 10-Year-Old Baseball
Crescenta Valley 8, Monte Vista 7 (8 innings): CV rallied from a
5-0 deficit to win a wild Section 2 Tournament opener that featured
19 hits and 14 errors Saturday night at Quartz Hill Little League
Field in Lancaster.
CV (5-0) played Monday night against District 40’s Sherman Oaks in
the winner’s-bracket final. A loss would knock the District 16
champion into today’s second-chance bracket final at 6 p.m., but a
win would afford CV another day off in preparation for Wednesday’s
championship game, also at 6 p.m.
James Heinemann capped CV’s comeback with a one-out single in the
eighth, scoring Bobby Coffin, who led the offensive attack for Dan
Mulcahey’s squad with three hits, a walk and three runs scored.
Heinemann finished with a pair of hits, a run scored and two runs
batted in for CV, which collected 10 hits, including two each from
Kyle Booth -- who doubled and drove in a run -- and Joey Sedano.
Sedano pitched five innings for CV and left trailing, 6-5, with
most of the runs being unearned. The right-hander gave way to Troy
Mulcahey, who tossed the sixth and seventh before being ejected,
forcing him to serve a mandatory one-game suspension.
But Niko Horwith shut down District 51’s Monte Vista (3-1) in the
top of the eighth, recording a pair of strikeouts to set the stage
for Coffin and Heinemann’s heroics.
Horwith also had a hit and scored a run, and Brendan Mulligan and
Conner Smith drove in runs for CV, which scored two each in the fifth
and sixth to tie it.
Senior Baseball
Northeast Los Angeles 8, Foothill-Tujunga 6: The District 16
representative couldn’t protect a 4-2 lead, surrendering five runs in
the fifth to fall in Sunday night’s winner’s-bracket final of the
Section 2 Tournament at Pioneer Park in El Monte.
Foothill-Tujunga (1-1) -- which played Monday night in the
second-chance bracket final in the 15- and 16-year-old division --
won its opening-round game, 9-3, against District 51’s Tehachapi
(3-1) on Saturday.
LA CANADA JUNIOR
BASEBALL/SOFTBALL ASSN.
8-and-under Softball
La Canada played its final tournament of the season Friday and
Saturday in the 13th annual Downey Ponytail Tournament.
However, it was the only tournament of the season the locals did
not emerge with a win or tie in any of its games.
In a hot afternoon doubleheader, the Spartans fell to Montebello
and Canyon Hills of Anaheim by scores of 16-1 and 15-1, respectively.
Stephanie Bathke hit a sole home run against Montebello and
Catherine Horner doubled in Brette O’Brien against Canyon Hills.
Grace Korkunis and Greta Gibbens played strong defense in the
outfield, which was frequently tested.
In their final game, the Spartans fell to Cypress, 12-0. Kelly
Trueblood got the lone hit for La Canada, and Stephanie Ferri and
Meghan Fuelling continued to play outstanding defense.
In its first season fielding an 8-and-under tournament team, La
Canada went 3-9-1.
10-and-under Softball
Like the 8-and-under team, the 10-and-under squad also
participated in the Downey Tournament and came away showing tons of
improvement.
In the opening game, the Spartans lost a heartbreaker to the
“Gundo Girls” from El Segundo, 7-0, although it was just 3-0 after
three innings of play.
In addition, La Canada stranded five runners during the first two
innings. Meredith Horner pitched a fine game, registering six
strikeouts.
Megan Lane, Teri Wulke, Kayla McCue, Riley Kessler and Elizabeth
Weinberger also had strong outings.
In the second game against a strong Downey squad, La Canada’s
offense struggled and was shut out again.
In the tournament’s final contest against Palos Verdes, the
Spartans started strong, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning.
In that game, Casey Forgey, Brooke Mulligan, Robin Jamison,
Catherine Weirick,, Megan Lane, Faye Oakes and Kelly Wang gave
commendable performances.
12-and-under Softball
La Canada dropped three heartbreakers in the Downey Tournament.
In the first game against top-seeded West Covina, the Spartans
fell, 2-1.
Kate Beck had a crushing hit for the locals, and Kathryn
Christensen scored the team’s lone run.
On defense, Kelly Horner and Anna Applebaum made phenomenal
catches, and Meghan Miller did a nice job behind the plate, helping
hurler Jessica Ferri, who fanned four.
La Canada didn’t fare as well in the second game, falling, 9-1, to
Montebello.
But the team bounced back in the third game, losing to Charter
Oak, 5-3.
In that game, the Spartans led, 3-0, in the first inning but
allowed five runs in the third.
Ferri pitched well for La Canada and Miller again did a nice job
behind the plate.
The team finished with a 3-9 tournament record this season,
prompting Coach Steve Ferri to say: “Every girl on the team improved
as the season went along.”
