‘Vagina Monologues’ canceled at The Alex

Producers of the national touring company of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina

Monologues” have canceled the show’s limited engagement next week at

The Alex Theatre in Glendale.

The tour of “The Vagina Monologues” was canceled after the show in

Thousand Oaks, Theater League representative Reida York said in an

e-mailed message.

Those who have purchased tickets will receive refunds at The Alex

box office, executive director Barry McComb said.

Brockus Project Dance Company and The Alex Theatre presents the

fourth in a series of performances that team a visiting national

dance company with local ensembles in “Split: Dance In & Out of LA.”

The performance is at 8 p.m. Aug. 30 at The Alex Theatre, and

features Eisenhower Dance Ensemble of Detroit, JazzAntiqua Dance &

Music Ensemble and Rei Aoo’s Dance Planet, both from Los Angeles, and

the Long Beach-based Brockus company.

Tickets are $25 and $15, and may be purchased at The Alex box

office, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale, by phone at 243-2539, and

A professional repertory company established in 1991, Eisenhower is one of Michigan’s premier dance troupes. The company performs a

diverse range of contemporary works under the direction of founder

Laurie Eisenhower.

The 15-member JazzAntiqua celebrates the African-American roots of

jazz with original jazz ballets. Rei Aoo’s Dance Planet performs a

blend of jazz and contemporary ballet. Founder Rei Aoo is also well

known for her roles in theater productions and has choreographed

numerous award-winning music videos.

Brockus Project Dance Company has grown in less than 10 years to

become a troupe admired for its humanistic touch, athletic dancing,

complex patterns and a mix of modern and jazz styles.

Foothill Summer Theatre’s “Les Miserables” opens at 8 p.m. Friday

at La Canada High School Auditorium.

The musical, based on the novel by Victor Hugo, continues at 8

p.m. Saturday and July 31 and Aug. 1, and at 2 p.m. July 27 and Aug.

2.

This year’s cast includes area students Robert Amour, Saro

Springer, Zack Wetzel (Bishop of Digne) and Victoria Young.

Directing the production is Zoe Bright, a member of the original

London cast. Bright is joined by musical director Dan Kerr,

choreographer Melinda Gillman, co-producer Joanna Hurst and costume

designer Janis Kerker.

Cajun music by Bonne Musique Zydeco will bring the lively,

infectious rhythms of Louisiana to Descanso Gardens at 2 p.m. Sunday.

This is the last of six “Music of America” summer concerts at the

gardens and is free with gardens admission.

Descanso Gardens is at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Canada Flintridge.

The gardens are open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Parking is free.

Admission fees are $6 for adults; $4 for seniors and students; $1.50

for children 5 to 12, and free for members and children 5 and
