LA CANADA GLADIATORS
GREMLIN DIVISION
East Los Angeles Bobcats 25, La Canada 6: The Gladiators could
only muster a first-quarter touchdown Sunday at Garfield High School
in East Los Angeles.
Horace Potter scored La Canada’s touchdown on a 71-yard run.
Teammate Joey Dowling, a running back, also played well for the
Gladiators.
La Canada was led offensively by quarterbacks Daleep Sandhu and
Nick Philo. Its offensive line consisted of Coleman Monroe, Bercut
Smith, Randel Mancilla, Buckley Miller, Joshua Lacey and tight end
Riley Cordova.
Riian Simpson, Logan Mendenhall, Phil Gandara and Paul Gandara
also played well on offense for the Gladiators.
Dowling had several tackles at middle linebacker for La Canada.
Paul Gandara and Aaren Vaughns also played well at linebacker.
The defensive line was anchored by tackles Sean Tierney, Dakota
Rodriguez, Gary Meek, Johnny Louk, Kevin Gregorian, Manuel Aguilera,
Clayton Kennely, Bradley Johnson, James Solorzano and Imari Sutphen.
JUNIOR PEE WEE
La Canada 6, East Los Angeles Bobcats 6: Led by running backs
Ricky Vaughns, Raheem Broadnex and Eugene Gandara and quarterback
David Whitaker, La Canada rallied with a fourth-quarter touchdown to
produce a tie against the Bobcats at Garfield High School in East Los
Angeles.
The Gladiators defense played well in the first half. Aaron
Simpson, Tyler Schloessmann and Niko Horwith each caused a fumble.
Linebacker Arian Abghari had an interception for the Gladiators, who
received strong defensive efforts from linemen Daniel Olson, Kitty
Guzman, Alex Ried, Chris Santillo, Maik’l Hines, Connor Smith, Andrew
Pilmer, Dobine Cochise and Marty Vardanian.
La Canada’s linebackers were Diego Lugo, Darius Clash and Cameron
Fisher, along with Andrew Carcich, Abghari, Horwith, Will Harrity and
Ben Brown.
The Gladiators were led by their offensive line of Whitaker, Joey
Sedano, Greg Szot, Kevin Figueroa, Ryan McAleenan, Anthony Carter,
Pilmer, Abe Dittu and Ky Charlton.
Geoffrey Vaughns, a wide out, also played well for La Canada.
PEE WEE
East Los Angeles Bobcats 26, La Canada 0: Hampered by illness and
injuries, the Gladiators dropped their game Sunday against the
Bobcats at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles.
La Canada’s defense was led by Daniel Alamillo, who had several
interceptions. Ryan Rue, Denver Cude, Matt May, David Reyes, Mac
Musso, Luke Gunter, Kevin Henderson, Jamie Hernandez, Matt Zilinsky,
Parker Campbell, Tyler Pase, Matt Rojas, Kyle Calvillo, Patrick
Wadding and Matt Lim.
Marcus Rodriguez, Ryan Martinez, Zilinsky and Lin played well on
offense for La Canada. Gunter, Hernandez, Andrew Overgaard, Trevor
Johnson, Anderson, Armen Tufenkjian, Sean Casey, David Burton and
Ryan Peters played well on offense for the Gladiators.
JUNIOR MIDGETS
East Los Angeles Bobcats 20, La Canada 6: The Gladiators opened
their season Sunday with a tough road loss at Garfield High School in
East Los Angeles.
La Canada quarterback Will Smiland threw a 55-yard touchdown pass
to Kyle Morgan in the third quarter to account for La Canada’s lone
score. Wide receiver Chris Sember had a reception in the second
quarter for the Gladiators, who received some good work from Sam
Dodge, Pierce Hutchins, Taylor Hurley, Brendon Costi, Danny Yoo,
Brandon Hammerli, Tyler Lopez and tight end Luc Laverdiere.
On defense, the Gladiators were led by Hutchins at linebacker. The
defensive line featured Jack Smith, Brandon Childs, Bin Alexander,
Kyle Hughes, Anthony Lombardo, Lopez, Hammerli, Eric Guzman
Laverdiere, Erik Dowling, Gavin Thomson, Drake Singleton and Dodge.
MIDGETS
La Canada 14, East Los Angeles Bobcats 6: La Canada, which
captured the conference championship last season, opened its season
Sunday with a victory at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles.
La Canada quarterback Danny Robinson and running backs Alex Clash
and Chris Rey helped the Gladiators build a 14-0 halftime lead. Clash
rushed for more than 100 yards in the game.
Behind a strong offensive line of center Reid Gantney and tackle
Bobby Pardo, along with Ron Wotner, Kevin Cude, Brandon Murphy, Trey
Kozacik, tight ends Andrew Zot and Austin Murphy and wide receiver
Owen Sherman.
La Canada took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter on a 73-yard run
by Clash, who also converted on the two-point attempt.
Robinson gave the Gladiators a 14-0 when he scored on a 9-yard run
in the second quarter. Wide receiver Chris Hieber caught passes of 47
and 31 yards from Robinson.
La Canada’s defense was anchored by Sean Lacey, Andrew Farestveit,
Zac Coffee, Philip Moses, Joe Cuellar, Charles Kimbrough and Nick
Alegria. Lacey and Farestveit each had a sack in the second half, and
Coffee produced a pair of solo tackles.
La Canada linebackers Eddie McFadden, Ryan Michael, Darwin Bacelis
and Parker Haleen also played well on defense for led La Canada.
Bacelis had several tackles and an interception in the second
quarter.
Ben Childs, Joey Orlandini, Marcus Thompson and Shelton Miles
played well in the secondary for La Canada. Miles recorded an
interception in the fourth quarter.
GLENDALE BEARS
GREMLIN DIVISION
Boyle Heights 14, Glendale 13: Glendale recovered the game’s
opening kickoff, and capitalized on the break. Running back Robert
Encarnacion scored on a 45-yard run to open the scoring. Boyle
Heights scored a par of first-half touchdowns to build a 14-6
halftime lead.
The Bears responded with a touchdown in the third quarter, but
couldn’t convert on several scoring opportunities in the fourth
quarter.
Anthony Ortega had a 20-yard run, thanks to some good blocking by
teammate Joel Nelson. Encarnacion had another long run.
Fabian Cordozo, Javier Leal, Jeremy Curdy, Jaycee Barajas and
Andrew Pantoja played well on offense for the Bears.
Barajas, Encarnacion and David Sanchez led Glendale’s defense.
JUNIOR MIDGET
Glendale 35, Boyle Heights 0: The Bears got started immediately,
recovering the opening kickoff.
Dominique Perkins recovered Ray Torres’ kick. Paris Holloway
scored on a 25-yard run about four minutes into the contest. Torres
converted on the extra-point attempt to make it 7-0.
The Bears then recovered a loose ball in Boyle heights’ end zone
for a safety to extend their lead to 9-0.
Glendale made it 15-0 on a 45-yard run by Dion Holloway. Glendale
quarterback Tommy De La Cruz then threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to
Torres to make it 21-0. De La Cruz then connected with Joe Hernandez
on a 45-yard touchdown pass to extend Glendale’s lead to 28-0.
Paris Holloway closed out the scoring on a 12-yard run, and Eric
Michael made the extra-point attempt to make it 35-0.
Glendale’s defense was led by John Montoya, Joe Robinson, Victor
Anaya, Randy Legaspi, Karsen Reedy and Scott Nelsen.
Danny Torres, Mark Plaza, Julian Holmes, Gabriel Prieto and
Francisco Rodas led the offense for the Bears, who also received
strong performances from Marcos Sanchez, Anthony Sanchez, Steve
Urquilla, Ian Conover, Vince Jurado, Ivan Rios, David Saucedo, Carlos
Rocha and Steve Urquilla.
