The playground at Crescenta-Canada Cooperative Nursery School was
more crowded than usual this weekend.
But not just with children.
About 20 of the nursery school’s students brought their
grandparents along Saturday during a Grandparents Day celebration at
the school, which is housed at Lutheran Church of the Foothills.
About 35 grandparents, many of whom came from out of town, had
breakfast, did finger painting, played in the school’s playground and
participated in a story hour with their grandchildren during the
event.
Kathy Bishop, who goes by G.G. -- Goofy Grandma -- drove down from
Lodi to spend the morning with her granddaughter, Kayla.
“This is such a great thing,” Bishop said. “It’s fun. [Kayla] just
loves to do everything, and goes from one thing to the next, kind of
like her goofy grandma.”
Kayla was eager to show Bishop her toys and where she sits when
she reads, and to introduce her grandmother to her friends.
“It feels good that she’s here,” Kayla said. “I showed her my
playground and my rabbit and my pictures. It’s fun.”
Students and their grandparents used paint to make handprints on
paper, and wrote a slogan on the paper that read, “No matter how old
I am, I’ll always reach for you. I love you.”
Arnold Wagner, whose grandson, Michael, calls “Opa,” has attended
Grandparents Day two years in a row.
“I don’t see him as often as I’d like, so I enjoy this very much,”
Wagner said. “I like to see what he is really learning and watch him
with the other kids.”
Crescenta-Canada Cooperative Nursery School provides early
childhood education for 3- and 4-year-olds from Altadena, Glendale,
La Crescenta, La Canada Flintridge and Sunland, said Nita Imm, the
school’s director.
“Just watching all the grandparents is so much fun,” Imm said.
“They are all so proud, and it’s rewarding to watch the kids interact
with their grandparents.”
