Local Shetland team captures title
The La Crescenta Shetland team won the PONY District Championship
by defeating Charter Oak, 18-14, this past week in an exciting
In the final inning, the 5- and 6-year-old team stopped a Charter
Oak rally with a throw from deep center by Haston Pawlik to Dacota
Cummins, who then threw a strike to catcher Conor Blakey to make the
tag at home.
Shortstop Gonzalo Rios was a standout as usual. Quinton Hill was
Outfielders Wyatt Ernst, Will Smiley and Wes Faure limited Charter
Oaks to singles with great plays in the outfield.
La Crescenta's offense was led by Chris Reik, who had three
doubles. Marco Angrisani delivered a clutch triple in the fourth
inning, Cameron Wetherby went four for four and Greg Stupakis hit a
home run in the final inning.
La Crescenta advanced to the World Series with the win.
Babe Ruth squad wins thrilling opener
The La Crescenta Babe Ruth 13-year-old baseball team defeated
Torrance, 12-11, on Sunday in Torrance in the Southern California
Daniel Park's single to left scored Chris Sember for the winning
run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Park finished two for three. He also walked twice.
Miles Brady went two for four with a walk.
Nick Gentili, who had a single and a double, drove in three runs.
