Chaminade Is Too Much For CV Tennis

Special to the Valley Sun

The Crescenta Valley High girls’ varsity tennis team barely put up a fight in a nonleague home loss to Chaminade last Friday.

The Eagles dominated in both singles and doubles action to defeat the Falcons 12-6. CV played nonleague home matches against Burbank on Tuesday and La Canada yesterday (Thursday), but results were not available at press time. The Falcons will travel to Burbank Burroughs today (Friday) for a 3:15 p.m. match.

In single’s matches, Chaminade was too strong for Crescenta Valley, winning seven of nine matches. Chaminade’s Ashley Poyer was the most dominant singles player, winning her three matches 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2 over Betty Lonescu, Tiffany Mann and Alina Karapetian respectively. The two victories for Crescenta Valley came from Karapetian who beat Megan Schulz and Rozita Ezzatian 6-0 and 6-3.

“It always feels good when you try hard and succeed,” said Karapetian after the match. “I need to work on my consistency, and on my serving game,” added Lonescu. “I gave up too many points on double faults,” she said.

The Falcons played better in doubles, but Chaminade still came out victorious in five of the nine matches. So Jung Yoon of Crescenta Valley teamed up with Hannah Whang to beat Alexandra Heaslet 6-4 and then teamed with Natalie Abou-Chakra to defeat Shanelle Sherlin and Jessica Harlan 6-1. Crescenta Valley’s team of Kiso Ito and Luana Choi, considered one of the strongest on the varsity, lost two of three matches.

Crescenta Valley head coach Tom Gossard was not happy with his team’s performance. “Our players need to work on their serving game, because that part of the game is very important if we want to go far this season,” coach Gossard said.

Despite the loss, the Falcons are still off to a good start, winning their first three matches. If they want beat to teams like Chaminade, they will have to practice more than they have been.
