Nellie Kenney celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends

at her home at the Montrose Healthcare Center in Glendale.

Nellie May Dunn was born Oct. 27, 1904, in Waymart, Penn. She was

the oldest of four children, one brother and two sisters, who are now

all deceased. She graduated from Hahneman Nursing Hospital in 1926 in

Scranton, Penn.

On Oct. 27, 1930, she married Maynard G. Kenney Sr. On July 27,

1931, Maynard G. Kenney Jr. was born. Maynard Jr. joined the Glendale

Police Department in December 1955 and retired in December 1985. He

passed away Aug. 9, 2000.

Kenney has two grandchildren, David Kenney, a sergeant with the

Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, and Susan Norcia, and five

great-grandchildren, Josh, Brittany, Brook, Joey and Elaine.

Kenney was a superb homemaker and took great pride in her yard and

roses. She baked something everyday and wrote in her diary every

night. Nellie and her husband, Maynard Sr., loved to throw dinner

parties and play cards. Maynard Sr. passed away in July 1979.

Pauline Beg of Glendale celebrated her 95th birthday with family

on Sept. 25.

She was born Sept. 25, 1909, in Bayonne, N.J., and came to

California in 1959. She has lived in Glendale since 1964.

Beg has had 12 children, 42 grandchildren and 33

great-grandchildren.

She insists God helped her raise her children and got her through

the difficult times.

Beg traveled to India with her first three children and had the

pleasure of meeting with Mahatma Ghandi.

Local residents who grew up near Thomas A. Edison School during

the mid-1960s knew her as Nanny.

Beg attributes her good health to God, vegetables, green tea,

soups and not eating out too much in restaurants.

Her clever remarks have prompted her friends and family to compare

her to Estelle Getty’s character on the TV show “The Golden Girls.”

And she is also 100% Sicilian.

Eva Hong Nunlist, the daughter of Yoon Kil and Dong Ja Hong of

Glendale and a first-year student at the University of New England

College of Osteopathic Medicine, participated in the college’s annual

White Coat Ceremony to formally recognize the transition students

make from laypersons to those assuming the responsibility of

physicians.

Several Glendale youngsters will perform as members of the Los

Angeles Children’s Chorus at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 and 4 p.m. Dec. 5 at the
